My son is almost 8 weeks old and the nipple on his bottle is collapsing when he eats. I thought maybe he needed a faster flowing nipple but with the newborn slow flow he is using now, he has milk streaming down his chin. If it were too slow flowing he wouldn't have the milk on his chin right? Not sure if a faster flow nipple will make things worse. Thoughts?
Re: Bottle nipple collapsing?
you are tightening the nipple part on too tight. when it is tight it can't allow air through when they suck so eventually when they have eaten enough the suction is so much in the bottle that the nipple collapses. loosening the top and not tightening it all the way will solve that problem.
solving the drooling milk is different. could be that the flow is too fast, or that he doesn't seal his lips well around the nipple, or he is prone to choking so he spits out what he doesn't swallow while he is sucking. My DD let so much run down her chin when the flow was overwhelming her or when the nipple didn't fit her mouth well.
I had that happen at 3 weeks and changed to a faster flow nipple... For me, it solved the problem.
You can try a faster flow nipple and if they begin to choke then its too soon... Just make sure you burp lots.
Lurking...but I agree with PP, you have the bottle cap screwed on too tight. Loosen it up a tad and it should solve the problem.
