Should we cancel our vacation?

Every November, my fiance and I go on a week long vacation to our favorite city. The week involved a lot of "go...go...go..." and absolutely no relaxation time.

I figure around that time I will be 6 months pregnant. I've never been pregnant before so can any of you veteran Moms tell me if it's a good idea to cancel or do you think it'll be fine?

Re: Should we cancel our vacation?

  • Well, I do advise that you need to take a bit of a break but as long as you can handle, there is no reason you should have to cancel.  The most you'd have to deal with is some back pain and achy feet.

    Have fun :)

  • Is your fianc? opposed to a relaxing vacation? I mean, I don't see a reason to cancel a trip, but maybe just no off trail hiking and horseback riding? Lol! There's no reason you have to do things the way you always did. You guys are in for some big changes.

  • I wouldn't cancel.  When I was 7 months pregnant I did a crazy camping trip in August in the South of Spain--it was insanely hot, but I chugged water and just kept up my regular pace.  I had a lot of energy at that point and since we didn't have another kid running around yet it was a very nice, relaxing trip for us.

ETA:  Also, ditto PPs, you can slow down a bit this vacation.  Still do some of the things you have in mind, but take some time to just chill.  You can find a happy balance.  :)

What is that -- like 28ish weeks? You should be fine but I'd checking in with your OB first. At 28 weeks I felt like a rock star but by 31-32 weeks I started swelling so a vacation would have been harder. Would you be able to get your money back if you guys need to cancel closer to November? If so, I'd keep the plans and gauge how you feel closer to.

  • I think 6 months along is the best time to travel!  You should have your energy back - as long as you don't overdo it, you should be feeling fine.  I wouldn't cancel it.  Just be sure to take care of yourself while you're gone, but I think 2nd tri is a great time to go.

  • I personally wouldn't, but thats just me.  DH and I are still trying to figure out what to do with the rest of our vacations this year... We have 1 week in OBX (I'll be just finished my first tri.  We were also going to do 2 weeks in Hawaii Nov/Dec, but since I won't be able to surf, we might try something different.  but will still be travelling at that point (unless of course my OB won't let me).

  • I wouldn't cancel it. 6 months isn't a bad time to travel - not too big, and m/s is usually gone by then. for what it's worth, DH and I are taking our 3 children to disney world in November, when I'll be 7 months pregnant. My mother and sister are coming along, so that will be a help. The only change I'm making is planning on taking it a bit easier, and avoiding certain rides. Have fun!

  • I say go! Instead of running around each day, schedule in a day at a spa or something relaxing.  Flying won't be a problem and driving is fine as long as you take breaks. Have fun!

  • Just make sure you take breaks. DH and I took one when I was 6 or 7 mos w/ DD and our hotel ended up being further from all the action than we realized (thank you Hotwire). I was pretty exhausted by the walk, but I was okay (just tired and sore).

"Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?...But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:26-27&33-34
  • 6 months is the golden month of pregnancy. Cute bump, nausea is gone, heartburn hasn't kicked into overdrive... Go, enjoy it, but warn your DH that you might want more sit-down breaks.

  • I'm going on a vacation with a lot of go go go at the end of this week (I'm 6 months), I'd say go for it.  If for some reason you're feeling awful around that time then cancel it when it comes up sooner but I don't see why you wouldn't be fine. Just take a couple extra breaks than you normally would to make it a LITTLE less go go and a little more relaxing.

  • I definitely think you should go but you will need to factor in a little more rest time in your day. You'll likely tire quickly in comparison to previous vacations so you have to listen to your body.

DH & I went on vacation this week and I've already started to notice that while I can do what I used to it leaves me more exhausted by the end of the night. We walked about 3 miles into Vancouver, WA from a light rail stop in Portland & back (6 miles total) plus all the city walking we'd done in Portland and I needed to take more breaks. When we got to Vancouver I was starving & thirsty and by the time we got back I was exhausted!

I see no reason not to go unless you & your husband refuse to factor in relaxation time. If you aren't willing to give your body a break while you're there you should reconsider.

  • Don't cancel, I travelled last October and had a baby in November.  Just stretch your legs a lot, drink lots of water, and follow your intuition in regards to what is too much for you.

  • NO, don't cancel your vacation. I've been traveling and doing all the "go, go, go" stuff. I wouldn't want to miss out on anything I have the opportunity to do before LO arrives.

We also have a huge trip planned in 3 weeks - I'll be 31 weeks. I wouldn't dream of cancelling.

  • Considering I'm heading out on vacay in August at 35w PG, I think you'll be just fine.  Just be prepared to take lots of breaks.  At least it won't be hot.

This! I felt great during my 5th to 8th month. So I would say you should definitely go!!! Like PP have said make sure that you let your OB know that you are going; just in case something happens.

  • Barring any complications, I'd definitely go. I felt really good around months six and seven and did plenty of traveling for work during that time. Go at your own pace, though, and if you need to rest at any point during the vacation, make sure you do so.
