Pregnant after IF

Constipation woes

Alright ladies...I need your suggestions. I am miserable right now & am about to get a bit graphic but I am desperate :(

It has been 9 days since I have had a BM & I am super uncomfortable. The bloat alone makes me look 6 mos pregnant. On top of the prescription prenatals, I started taking Zofran last week for the m/s (which causes constipation) & have been taking Colace & Mirilax everyday (per Dr's oders) for the last week & it hasn't produced anything. I can produce a couple of little "pebbles" but it takes work to even do that. I stopped taking the Zofran 2 days ago hoping it would help but no luck.

I need some natural remedies that have worked for you ladies who have been in this same situation. At this point I am willing to try anything. I see my OB on Friday so will talk to her about it if I haven't gone by then but in the meantime, I need to try something.

Please help...

Re: Constipation woes

  • I switched from zofran to phenegran (way better at helping with m/s anyway but it makes you a little drowsy so I only take it at night and it lasts about 12 hours) and that helped me.  Also, my doctor recommended drinking one 8 ounce cup of coffee a day to help things getting moving, (I stopped once it did) and I do colace around the clock and drink lots of water.

I think the coffee help me getting things back on the right track.

  • Oy!  I had some constipation during 1st tri but nothing bad like yours!  And I didn't have m/s so no zofran for me.

What I did was drink TONs of water every day, made sure I ate TONS of fruits & veggies every single meal, added 2 teaspoon of wheat bran to my breakfast granola.  All these things helped.  Once I got to 2nd tri, I added back 1/2 cup of coffee in the am and the coffee works wonders.  GL!

  • The zofran constipation was awful!!  I took colace and I also ate apples and prunes.  Tried to get fiber (took the gummies) - it was hard though.  I used glycerine suppositories a couple of times.  I read mixed things about them, but I was desperate!

  • Sorry you are dealing with that, it is no fun!  I tried prune juice and dried apricots, which both were helpful.  I had to stop the rx prenatals and go back to otc ones.  I've been fairly regular now, and I'm scared to go back on the rx :(

  • Try this: have a glass or a bottle of water on your night stand so soon as you wake up you drink at least 8oz,  eat a mango every morning on an empty stomach and eat lots of plain yogurt. Also if you take magnesium and calcium it will help. Oh and have a hot beverage after dinner. I do all this and i have been regular everyday. Hope it helps.
  • It sounds silly, but what helped me was lots and lots of water and raisins.  Hope you feel better soon.

  • - up your fiber intake (high fiber cereal and fiber bars)

    - up water

    - try some coffee (even 1/2 caf / 1/2 decaf mix)

    - prunes and dried apricots

    - if you can drink it, try prune juice and if it's gross then try plum juice

    - magnesium pills (200 mg a day) and calcium (i can give you s supp rec that has both if you want, shoot me an email)

  • After 9 days I would probably see someone.  You may be impacted.  I am a baby though and get upset if I don't go everyday.

I went through the same thing!  My doctor suggested Colace and any "P" fruit or juices - prunes, peaches, etc.  I hope you get relief soon, it's awful!!

Oh my goodness NINE days?! I would not be in a very good mood... I am so sorry for you! For me, 3 glasses of metamucil and tons of water does the trick. I would also try the suggestions above.

I hope you feel better asap!!

Raisin bran, dried apricots, and fiber one granola bars helped me.  Oh, and staying really hydrated.  GL, that's miserable.

  • Prunes, pears and grapes work better for me than Colace.  I cannot stand prune juice so I drink pear juice and eat baby food prunes and/or dry prunes. Also, hot water with lemon helps me too. Good luck!

  • Okay, this is kind of gross but...

I love pepperoncini - to the point of where I've eaten an entire jar before! I know...gross. Anyway, there is something about eating all these spicy peppers that REALLY cleans out the system. So if you're desperate I highly recommend these!

  • I can understand where you are at.  I was in the hospital in January for a week (not constipation or pregnancy related) and I didn't have a BM for 12 days!  I am irregular to begin with but this was a long time.  After trying all of the hospitals remedies this is what worked for me:

    1)  Acidophilus (not sure on spelling) but it helps keep your itestines healthy - I was also told by my naturopath tha this is good during pregnancy to help with the babies potential allergies/immune system

    2) Drink LOTS of water

    3) Bake bran muffins and try eating All Bran bran buds (a lot less sugar than all bran bars/raisin bran) for breakfast

    4) Cut out all dairy products (except yogurt - the cultures are good) until you've had a BM

    Good luck!!!!

  • I take 2 colace a day, I'm allowed up to 6, and have a starbucks half caf.  It's really the coffee that has helped!
