mom's - post partum question

when you were in the hospital, did the nurses massage your uterus every few hours after birth (regardless of whether you had any bleeding issues at birth?)

Re: mom's - post partum question

  • They should.  It helps your uterus contract back down and prevent hemorrhage.  When I did my OB rotation I had to do it to all of my patients after delivery.

  • They did - as far as I know I didn't have any bleeding issues beyond what is normal.

  • ummm, i think they did it a couple of times in recovery (not real sure, i was sleeping in between being prodded), but nothing too hard.  i had a c-section so they just gave me pitocin to make it contract down.
  • I think it was about every 3-4 hours up to the 12 hr mark then they just did every 12 hours. ?I didn't have excessive bleeding, I was in normal sized pads within 24 hours.
  • They did it once - then no one touched me again except to just examine my c-scar.

And actually - it wasn't even a massage - the nurse just felt my uterus to see it's size and remarked that I needed to go pee.

  • We've been taught to assess the fundus and massage those that are boggy.  Breastfeeding also helps contract the uterus back down.
  • I guess so?  They kept checking it to see the size and check on my c-section.  I wouldn't really call it a massage though.
  • Ditto butterfli. Check the fundus, if boggy or increased bleeding then might massage, however a lot of the times it's boggy because the bladder is in the way and needs to be emptied, then it goes right back to being firm and the bleeding slows.
  • When they checked me every few hrs they would push down on it to make sure it was hardening, but other than that..no.
