heartburn help please!

hellooo...

so usually some milk helps the odd heartburn situations i've had, but today I had a staff BBQ and ever since it's been brutal!  I even had a large glass of milk and it didn't help really. what are others doing? I've heard we aren't "allowed" tums. Is this true or what are people's thoughts on this?

TIA!

Re: heartburn help please!

  • I have absolutely no experience with heartburn that bad but I do hope you feel better soon! Just the little bit I have had was miserable.

  • Tums are fine, just don't eat them like candy. Usually one is enough to ease heartburn for me, but my heartburn is mild and infrequent.
  • I'm not sure where you've heard you aren't allowed tums - they are as far as i know on the 100% ok list (with every doc) - My doc has me on Zantac - and some also (my doc too) allows prilosec.

My doc mentioned that if tums weren't helping sometimes the liquid version helps more then the chalk tabs ;)

  • Tums are totally allowed just don't overuse them like pp said. Also OTC Zantac is ok too.

  • I know this may sound gross, but apple cider vinegar can do the trick! A spoonful will do...

  • I have the WORST heartburn every day, all day long, so I feel you, bigtime.  My midwife has me taking 2 Zantac every night before bed, but to be honest it's really not helping.  It may help you though, esp if it hasn't been that severe.  Tums are safe, but you just want to make sure you don't take too many.  I've sworn off Tums since I started my Zantac ... about to call my midwife and ask for something stronger.  Blahhh.

This is so funny that you posted this. I had never heard this until earlier today. I posted on 2nd Tri board about my acid reflux issue and them changing meds on me . Thank god the doc changed my meds back to the original.

Anyway I was telling a friend how bad it was while waiting to hear from doctor and she told me this. It has something to do with the acid in your stomach and the acid from the vinegar mixing and forming a base.

    It worked wonders

I was kinda wondering how that worked, but hey, it's worth a try if tums don't help. still waiting on those... sheesh

  • Titrilac has been working for me.  It's OTC and on the safe list.  I think it is less chalky tasting than Tums.

  • Tums are fine like PPs. I don't really find they work but I get bad heartburn without being PG. I use Gaviscon and it works really well and comes in chewable tablet or liquid form. But my MWs also seconded vinegar for heartburn. Something about introducing more acid into the body helps the body work overtime to neutralize it.

  • Tums are fine. If it persists, you can use Zantac 75.

And I use it before I eat something I anticipate will cause problems.

  • My high risk OB has said that Tums are okay. I've never heard otherwise but personally speaking tums hasn't been helping me much lately and this is on top of my regular acid reflux medication. I would say try 2 Tums and see if that helps. I hope you feel better soon!

FYI - do ask - my doc said that constant heartburn can hurt the esphogus (something i knew from before) and that puts you at risk for cancer in the throat.

  • My Doctor lists Pepcid AC (which I take daily) and Zantac. Tums are okay to take just a warning of a RARE side effect. A girl from the bump during my last pregnancy ate tums like candy which caused kidney stones. A few a day as needed should not be a problem.

  • My doc said all heartburn meds are a-OK except for "The Pink Stuff".  Those awful chalky liquids apparently contain aspirin. But all of the "acid reducer" OTC meds are fine, and they work wonders.  It's a good thing, too - I'd be miserable without them!
