How to "break" the swaddle habbit

We still have some time because I don't think they are anywhere near rolling over yet, but wondering how people do this? They will fall asleep without being swaddled, but ONLY in the swing and don't stay asleep for long (but they really aren't good sleepers with the swaddle anyway). We are actually trying it right now and they are waking up and rubbing their faces every 5 minutes.

  • We are slowly trying to wean our LO from needing to be swaddled.  We started by leaving one arm out for a couple weeks.  Now we leave both arms out but keep the rest of her swaddled.  On really hot days we put her down for naps unswaddled.  Slowly but surely its going ok..... hopefully soon we will be rid of the swaddle all together.  At least now she is able to roll both ways even with her bottom half still swaddled.

  • We went cold turkey.  DS was sleeping terribly swaddled anyway over the past few weeks, so we figured it couldn't get any worse.  We had a few restless nights but the last couple of nights he has been sleeping much better.  If you are working you may want to do it on a weekend.

  • We did it last week pretty much cold turkey because he went from not being able to roll one day to rolling everywhere the next. I thought it was going to be a horrible transition because his hands used to be all over his face before, but it's actually gone okay. We had one pretty bad night but since then it's been okay. He's not a terrific night time sleeper anyway, so we're back to his "usual".
