Natural Birth

back labor predictions based on early contractions

Just curious if you think it's a good sign I won't have back labor if the few contractions I'm getting now are only felt in the front?  She feels like she's still OP based on what the spinning babies site says and her motions but the few contractions I got today were only mildly uncomfortable just below my belly.  I had been fearful of a back labor because of her being OP but not sure if this is a good predictor or not.

Re: back labor predictions based on early contractions

  • I'm curious too...all my contractions I've had are absolutely in my back and are horrid, even though they are mild and I am started to doubt my ability to do this epidural free.  I see baby on u/s every week and every single time she is facing my front and never in a good position.

I am praying and praying she turns around when it's officially go time...I feel like someone is trying to rip my spine out through my bottom with some of those contractions and they aren't even the real deal yet :(

My LO was sunny side up and because of that I had extremely painful back labor. Once I started to have real contractions, I always felt them mainly in my back and only slightly in the front. I would say that while although it is a good sign that you aren't having back pain at the moment, the baby can always change positions and you might end up having back labor anyway. Hopefully that is not the case for you! It is so much harder to have a natural birth when you feel like your back is snapping in half.

  • I don't know, but just wanted to say that my first baby was sunny side up (during labor I'm pretty sure and born facing up) and I did NOT have any back labor.  So, you may well be in the clear.  I would put that worry aside and just forge ahead.

    Good luck!

  • All of my Braxton-Hicks were up front, but when I went into labor, I felt it both in front and in my back (baby was not sunny side up).  I think it was only mild back labor though, because I didn't experience what most women describe.  What helped the most was DH using tennis balls on my lower back as counter pressure.

While where it's felt is part of the equation, but I usually pay careful attention to the early labor contraction pattern. If there's a double peak (one ends and another begins right away, then a gap before the next one) or if they are oddly close for your stage of labor (2-4 minutes in early labor), usually there's a problem with positioning.
  • I did not have back labor in my early labor, I'm pretty sure he went sunny side up on the day my contractions slowed down because when I went into 1st stage labor it was back labor galore.  So, you never cant tell.

  • I had contractions for seven weeks prior to having my daughter.  None of which were even remotely felt in my back.  Then from the moment my induction started until I consented to the epidural it was thirteen hours of excruciating back pain and I didn't feel any pain/discomfort in my abdomen.  Shortly before they placed the epi, a nurse finally realized she was sunny side up.  DD didn't rotate until I was pushing.  I'm sure the pitocin made it worse though.

  • I don't know, but I can tell you my experience.  My first pregnancy ended in a (natural) miscarriage, which entailed 12 hours of contractions - most of which felt like my back was on fire.  My second pregnancy ended in a live birth, in which DD1 was sunny-side up until the very last minute, and involved 21 hours of painful back labor - again, it felt like a band of fire across my lower back.  When labor started with DD2, I told my mw I thought she was sunny side up, because I felt it in my back.  Nope, she was in exactly the right position. My mw told me that some women just always have back labor ... and I guess I am one of the lucky ones.  Hopefully you won't be.
