There were rumors going around campus starting last Friday about a big announcement. Yesterday and last night, we were all compulsively checking our emails and googling in vain. Today when we came in, we got an email about a very important meeting at 11:30 and that we all need to attend, even if we are traveling, we need to attend at the nearest site (wtf). Anyways, people are going crazy here!! The rumors are just getting worst, went from 40% layoff to site shut down. I am so indifferent about everything. Such is life, I guess!
Re: OMG!! The saga continues.....
Good luck! Last August they announced the shut-down of manufacturing at our site. I remember the rumors, etc leading up to the time of the actual plant-wide meeting. An hour prior to the meeting a member of senior management stopped at certain people's desks and asked us to meet them in another location on site after the plant-wide meeting. They kept about 30 of us when all was said and done for sales & after-market support.
I remember it being a very stressful week as the people involved were seen around and people meeting off-site. It was pretty obvious what was happening.
Honestly I am not going to sit here and be sad. There is nothing I can do about it. While I didn't think the site would get shut down, I could see them cutting people. They said we can do whatever we want except work so I am going home. I have no idea what to do with DD....should I take her out of day care at the end of the month??? Should I wait? Will I find a new job?? LOL Do I want a new job??? DH is freaking out bc pressure is on him but whatever like I said I saw it coming.
Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry! I have the same questions as MarSam. Can you guys live on your H's salary alone? If you get a severance package you can have a fun summer at least while you look for work. From the searches I've done, it looks like clinical research is an area that is still hiring. I've seen jobs at some places in Westchester, actually.
I think you should take the day to get a mani/pedi and have a drink and then pick up DD.
I am in pre-clinical not clinical. They are actually keeping 250 of the clinical people bc 50% of their testing is actually done on the East Coast in North America.
I do get severance for about a year, but you guys know that stuff is taxed 50% right? So in reality, it's like a 6 months pay out. DH does not have a job, I pay for EVERYTHING with my salary, which is the only reason I stuck it out here. I get 60 days non working paid days apart from severance so I do plan to enjoy those days
I wouldn't care as much if I had not renewed my lease a week ago. You see, I'd feel better knowing that I have flexibility in the location and not have to stick around here.. I guess my other concern is should I take DD out from daycare or have her stay there? She LOVES it there and we waited a LONG time to get a spot but it's $1600 a month and i guess we can save the money, especially if we have to move and lose our rent deposit. But if I take her out, we will lose her spot and then we'll have to switch her if we remain here. I am not so worried about losing my job, just the logistics of what to do now. My main concern is stability for DD while being financially savvy.
DH is not graduating until 2014 and we have enough money to keep us a float until then BUT it would involve dipping into our savings, which I am not comfortable doing. We can get health insurance through his school. I want to have a job while he is in school.
Yes, we have nothing to do because all the projects got cut, even the ones in clinical trial. According to the news, our work increased by 20% but they'd rather put the money into late stage clinical trials since getting FDA approvals is so tough these days. Do you get UE with severance?
Yes, overwhelming because you want to be economical but you cannot predict the future.
Sounds like you are taking the news well about the shut-down.
In NC UE does not kick-in until you've gone through pay-outs for vacation, severance ,etc. When they lay people off in my company they do not give severance -they give a supplement to UE. The length of time for the supplement depends on time of service, any negotiating you do, etc. The supplement brings your UE up to your wage when you were working. To get the supplement you have to sign a non-compete for any sector that our company manufactures in not just the segment youi worked for.
The daycare sounds like a big expense. If you think you are going to find another job quickly I would keep the spot but if not I would let it go,
I would so milk it! Now I want to be laid off, so that I don't have to go back to work in the fall. Lol.
Wow, this is nuts!
First, you can totally get NJ UE while receiving severance. I've known many people that have done this. And you'll pretty much get UE for almost 2 years but I think the max they pay is like close to $600 per week if I'm not mistaken. Don't quote me on that.
I agree with PP (don't remember who) that if you think you'll end up working again sooner than later than it's best not to let DD lose her spot at that daycare that you love so much.
Can you talk to your landlord since you only signed your lease a week ago and explain the situation? That way if you need to move somewhere less expensive then you have that option.
In terms of stability for your DD, I wouldn't worry too much because for her she just gets to hang out with her parents more - that's not bad or stressful, she'll adjust fine and love it. In the DCs I checked out, they can hold your place for a lower fee. Is that an option? If you're going on interviews, you might need the DC anyway, right? (And to apply for jobs you'll probably need it - trust me!)
It sounds like you're trying to make the best decisions for your family. I think you should sleep on it for a couple of days before you make any major changes. You sound really chill about it, but I suspect you'll have a few different waves of anxiety.
FWIW, I personally wouldn't take so long off from working. I'd rather work now and continue to build savings and security. I might take the summer off, but not much more than that.
I will be off from work for the Summer. We are not required to come in anymore....and then when we receive our release dates, we will have 60 non-working paid days. So basically I will be employed here until September (at least).
Thanks for the information about UE! I will look into it, I didn't know it was that much. I think I will max out at whatever their limit is, based on FLI. This area/ NJ is going to suffer because they are letting go of 1000 scientisst/ lawyers/ financial people, and 1500 contingency workers over the next couple years.
The thing with the daycare is that they are really sought after, so I am sure she will drop my spot as opposed to getting less tuition. I am not worried about her staying with us, I just don't want to take her out of this DC then lose the spot, then be forced to enroll her in another DC.
What is the waitlist on this place? Months? Years? If you were to find a job in september and start a few weeks later, could you maybe get her in?
