How old was your LO when..

They started to walk?

DS is 11.5 months and isn't yet.  I'm not in a rush either, he crawls fast enough...I know its going to be even crazier when he starts walking.

I was wondering what the average is.

I've been around a few other LOs the same age (both girls) and one was walking at 10.5 months and the other 11.

Re: How old was your LO when..

  • DS is the same age as your LO and he can't walk independently either.  He has been cruising with his Activity Walker for about 2 months tho, but shows no interest in going solo.

  • DS was walking at 10 months and DD was 14.5 months. The age range for walking is something huge like 9-18 months.

  • My older one was like 11-11.5 months. I don't remember exactly, except that when I see pics of her first birthday party she was walking steadily by then! I know it was like 11ish months.

My younger one was walking early, by 9.5 months she was a steady walker. I was hoping she would wait longer so it would be longer before I had two mobile kids lol!

  • mine were both about 15 months when they were really walking well on their own.  I was just reading an article the other day that this is psychological as much as physical.  A lot of kids (mine included) are really able to walk before they are comfortable with "letting go."

  • DS#1 about a week or two after his first birthday.

    DS#2 21.5 months.

Of they are not walking by 18 months you may want an evaluation.

This was certainly true with DD.  She was physically able to walk at about 12 months, but wasn't brave enough to do it until 14.5.  I could pretend to hold her under her arms and she'd putter around all on her own.  I just had to touch her occasionally so that she thought I was providing balance.

  • I have twin girls. One started walking at 11 months. The other one started walking at almost 16 months. They had the same environment, same opportunities, etc. They walk when they're ready and each one is so different!

This could really explain DD being an early walker.  She's very outgoing and is proving to be a little bit of a dare devil.

  • 11 months--once she took her first steps she took off pretty quickly and was walking around independently on her 1st birthday. My nephew is 2 weeks older than DD and he walked at 14 months. He did the cruising stage for like 6 months

  • My DD didn't army crawl until 11 months...full on crawled at 11.5 months...pulled herself up at her first birthday party...and walked at 14.5 months.

It will happen, don't stress it!

  • Big difference here.

My oldest took his first steps at 8.5 months old. Was a full time walker (ie walking instead of crawling 100% of the time) at 11 months.

My youngest took her first steps at 11 months. Was a full time walker at 14 months.

My son's OT told me walking on average occurs between 10-17 months. There's a big range of "average" when it comes to that milestone.

  • The average is around 12 months, HOWEVER the normal range is up to 18 months.

My DD walked at 14 months.  It only took her a couple of days after she took her first step to be walking all over the place.

DS was about 10.5 months when he took his first steps, but had terrible balance for what seemed like forever. He is still a little unsteady when he runs for very long or when he climbs.
