Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Desperately needing help with formula...

Due to some personal health issues I was put on medication that prevents me from BF.  DS has been on formula for about a month.  We started with Enfamil newborn but had some issues with gas and digestion.  Our ped suggested gentlease with a probiotic supplement which only made the problem worse.  She then suggested we try soy which has been an improvment from the gentlease but DS still seems to have issues with it.  He is pretty much miserable all the time when he eats.

Have any of you run into this issues?  If so which formula are you using?  I'm pretty desperate.

PS Nutramigen and alimentum are not really affordable options as I have to see several specialists weekly for my health issues and my DH has had his hours cut sigfinicantly until August.

 Thanks Ladies!

  • I would call the pedi and they typically have samples of those formula's and if they work than you should be able to get it covered by insurance.   I know most babies that do not tolerate formula well have a milk intolerance and with that they also have a soy one.   Which would be why you are seeing a slight improvement in it.   It is called MSPI .   IF the pedi does not call enfamil and they will send you coupons and a free sample if you explain to them what is going on

Your pedi could give you samples of the Nutraigen & Alimentum. And FYI...you than likely you can get them covered by your insurance IF your pedi writes a script it. Ours pays 80% for Alimentum rtf.

Just wanted to share incase you may need to try in the future. GL!

  • Ugh, I totally feel for you. Formula isn't the easiest to digest, and a ton of babies don't do well on it. My older son had to be on Alimentum for an entire year, and after seeing a GI doctor we still couldn't get our (seemingly great) insurance to pay for any of it. So we spent $200 a month on it for a year. I'm EBF this baby as long as I possibly can, because I know when we go on formula we'll have to go the same route.

Have you tried Good Start's new formula, Soothe? It's lactose free like Similac Sensitive, but it also has probiotics in it...it might work? I also agree with pp that a hypoallergenic formula might be your only option, despite the cost. Otherwise you're going to have to deal with a miserable baby. I'd talk to your insurance about paying for it, ask your pediatrician for as many samples as you can, and possibly call the formula companies and see what kind of coupons and stuff they can send you.
