Pregnant after IF

Ugh...

I've been cramping off and on since Sunday (no bleeding...just cramping)...

I was pretty sure it was digestive related but at this point I'm not sure exactly what's going on and it has me a little concerned that maybe it's not digestion issues. Especially since it's continuing now that I've finally been able to use the bathroom... but maybe I'm still backed up?

I've increased my fluids and fiber and am taking it easy on the couch/bed...

Should I call the doctor? I have an appointment on Thursday so it's only 2 days away but my doctor is not in the office on Wednesdays... I'd feel silly if they have me come in only to find out it's just constipation but on the other hand...?

Re: Ugh...

  • Calling the doctor is never a bad idea, especially if it will give you peace of mind. But, if you really believe it is constipation related, you can take Colace. That is what my OB recommended. You should be drinking LOTS of water as well. That will help with both constipation and cramping. FWIW, I have had cramps throughout this entire pregnancy, especially in first tri. It can be very normal. When I have called for pain, the OB always assesses my symptoms and tells me what to look out for (bleeding, leaking, fever, cramps that come in waves....and now that I am bigger, a hardening belly). Hope you feel better soon!

  • It's never wrong to call your doc if you're feeling uneasy about something. They may have you come in early or wait til Thurs. Let their triage person help you decide what's best. FWIW, I've had plenty of on and off cramping. Sometimes I feel silly b/c I don't know what I'm feeling, but these are all new sensations.

  • I have a glass of prune juice every morning when I get up. It's not the best tasting stuff in the world.. but it works! It's better than feeling all backed up. Colace did nothing for me. I hope you feel better soon.

  • I called and I am waiting for someone to call me back after they give my message to the doctor. (It's a small practice with only one nurse and one doctor...)

I'm mostly concerned because I'm in the process of tapering off my hormones and this started in the middle of the taper... Also, I haven't had any cramping before Sunday when this started. And DH is out of town on business so I'm on my own...

Thanks for the advice and encouragement. I'll let you know what happens.

So sorry you aren't feeling well... I just wanted to tell you that I have had some pretty bad cramping on and off this whole pregnancy.  It is definitely worse when I can't go to the bathroom.  It is also worse if I do something more physical.  My Dr. said it is normal.  Your uterus and ligaments surrounding it are stretching and sometimes it can be painful.  Then it doesn't help that most of our prenatal vitamins contain iron which can make you constipated. I drink 3 glasses of metamucil a day and that seems to at least help with that issue.  Not to be gross but if I don't go to the bathroom every morning I am very uncomfortable all day.  I hope it gets better for you soon!

  • All is fine with our snowflake (and I even got an ultrasound without even having to ask for one)! I, however, have a UTI and will be starting antibiotics tonight.
