1st Trimester

I stopped taking Zoloft & the withdrawal symptoms are horrible...

Please tell me when these withdrawal symptoms will go away. Its like a dizzy, extremely tired feeling every time I turn my head. It comes in waves. It gets worse when I'm tired. I havent taken a pill in almost 5 days. I know this is not morning sickness (I'm about 5wks along) because I've had these symptoms before when I tried to stop taking the pill before I got PG. Now the symptoms feel more intense because I am pregnant, and I did wean myself off of the pill slowly but the symptoms are still there.

Please give me some encouraging words.

Re: I stopped taking Zoloft & the withdrawal symptoms are horrible...

  • I was in the exact same boat as you just a few weeks back...trust me....IT DOES GET BETTER!  You just have to hang in there and bare these awful withdrawl symptoms for a little while.  For me it took a good 2 weeks to finally stop feeling all the withdrawl symptoms. Sleeping does help! Try and get as much rest as possible, if you have other children try and get your family to help with them. You may have a bit of ms mixed with all the other symptoms as well. I had heard that B12 helps as well as B6. I took B12 and fish oil pills. Also, I would recommend accupuncture, it really helped with the withdrawl symptoms.  Hang in there....those symptoms may seem like they will never end but they will. Just keep thinking of the baby and that your doing this for your LO.  I don't know how to do it, but if you want to message me and vent/talk your welcome to :)

I feel for you! When I stopped Zoloft awhile back it was pretty awful - hot flashes, headaches, dizziness. I had been taking it for almost two years and getting off of it was not fun. My symptoms lasted about a week before I started feeling (mostly) normal again. FX for you and I hope you feel better soon!

  • I am sure it will only last a short while. I was on Zoloft and only experienced withdraw symptoms for a few days. I'm not on anything now and I feel great :) It's all worth it for our babies.

  • Ditto the PP - did you wean off with instructions from your doctor???

I weaned off in the past and still had withdrawal symptoms, but then I realized that it was really because I still needed the medication.  Zoloft is considering safe during pregnancy & I have no hesitation staying on my meds (did during my 1st pregnancy too).   BTW, what you are talking about are called "brain zaps".  They are horrible.  I would contact your doctor and ask what he/she would recommend.  Perhaps you could get by with a low dosage?

  • It absolutely WILL go away.  Just hang in there.  You might even find that you feel better once it's out of your system.  For some people pregnancy hormones have a way of helping certain anxieties, etc. that cause the need for things like Zoloft.  Good luck!

BTW I did write this assuming you have discussed quitting/weaning with your doctor.  As others said - make sure you do because stopping without weaning could be dangerous.

  • I took myself off (bad bad) back in January and it was pretty hellish for about a month or so . It DOES get better. The withdrawal issues were bad, but just as bad IMO was not knowing if or when they would stop. Good luck, and i hope you.feel better soon.
  • OOOOOOH man, do I know what you mean! I was ONLY on 50 mg for like 6 months. From that point I tapered off soooo slowly, to the point I was only taking like.05 mg a day. And even going off of that was horrible. Brain zaps, nausea, headaches, dizziness, moody, etc. BUT the good news is, I never thought it would get better, and it has!! I feel better than when I was on it. Zoloft did help for what I needed it for, but it will take a LOT for me to go back on it again because the withdrawl effects were just awful. And I took it really slow.

Anyway, that long winded response brings me to this: I would NOT go off cold turkey. It causes more harm to your body/fetus doing that, than it does actually taking the drug. Obviously, you want to get off of it, but you need to do it slowly. Of course I'm not a dr, so maybe you shouldn't listen to me. But that was what my dr told me.

Good luck, I really sympathize with you! :(

Did your doctor tell you to stop taking it cold turkey? They actually prescribed it to me when I was pregnant with DS although it was later than the first trimester. I don't think you are supposed to stop taking it abruptly.

I ditto the recommendation to talk to your doctor. Also, zoloft is considered safe for pregnancy. Presumably you're taking it for a valid reason. I would NOT just stop taking it without doctor supervision.

I didnt just stop taking it, I slowly weaned myself off of the pills the way I should have, and have now stopped taking them because the weaning phase was over with. I just wish these symptoms would go away! I'm almost a week in after weaing myself so I'm on my way there, it just cannot come soon enough!

  • Thanks for all the wonderful support and kind words. This really makes me believe there will be light at the end of the tunnel with all of this. And to the ladies who have said that Zoloft is safe, I do know that, but I dont like the thought of taking any time of medication while pregnent, unless I really need it. I'm going to try it, and if I have to, then I will go back on it. I just need to get past these horrible symptoms. Thanks again every body!! :)
