I know in a previous post many people said that the Ergo is a lifesaver and great. I was just looking it up and realized the dramatic price difference! On Target, I see that they run around $115 - $130. I honestly didn't know that infant carriers costs this much! My cousin who is having a baby registered for the Infantino Swift Baby Carrier and it is $15.99. Honestly, the reviews are pretty good on it.
For those who have used an Ergo, how long can it normally be used for? Being a first time mom, I'm not sure how often I will use a carrier, but know that I would like one. It just seems REALLY expensive, given that I don't know how often I will use it. It's not that we can't afford it, I'm just trying to be practical. Is it worth it?
Re: Infant Carriers - Ergo, others. Cost
I didn't use an Ergo last time but I did have a Moby Wrap ($40ish). LO didn't like it. I know people say that you have to be using it wrong if LO doesn't like it....That all babies like it. Well, my DD didn't. We used it only a couple times and she fought the whole time, plus it was summer and she was really hot in it. I'm looking for a new carrier for our next LO though. I was thinking the Balboa Baby carrier looked neat and not too expensive.

Totally agree with this. If you are going to be using it regularly I would spring for a better carrier.
I definitely think it's something worth investing in. I believe the weight capacity goes up to 45lbs, which is the size of a 4-5yo.
Personally, we use a Boba, which is also a soft-structured carrier like an Ergo, that I picked up for... I think around $60 on one of those deal a day sites. Ergos pop up sometimes as well, but I think they're slightly more expensive... maybe $80-$90, but still a discount, so that's an option. You can also find them used as consignment sales/stores, craigslist, etc. as a PP suggested.
I wore DS quite a bit and still use our Boba occasionally.
Personally, I would recommend going with a stretchy wrap (like a Moby) at first to see if you and your LO enjoy babywearing. That's the best option for a newborn, it'll last you for a good while, and it's a less expensive option so it'll give you the chance to try it out before you commit to a more expensive carrier that you can use long term.

This, there really is a huge difference. And also make sure that the baby's weight is not on their crotch, it's really bad for their hips. Baby Bjorns are crap for the wearer and the baby.

Oh, I just looked up the Infantio Swift specifically. I would advise against it. It's smilair in style to a Bjorn. It's not going to be comfortable for you and it's a crotch dangler = bad for baby.
Definitely look into other options. I think Infantio has a Mei Tei-style carrier. I'd suggest that over the Swift.
ETA: They do, it's called the EcoSash. They also have a SSC-style, the Balance. I don't know how these compare in quality to some of the bigger brands, but the design themselves are far superior to Bjorn-style carriers.

Wow! Thank you for your research in looking that up for me! Given the suggestions, I think I will go with the Ergo. For more comfort, and for longer lasting. Honestly, it is only less than $100 more than the others. And who knows, maybe I'll get it for my baby shower!
And I'll get a gender neutral one, so I can use it for our next baby! Thanks for all the advice ladies!
We have a Baby Bjorne, which is great when they are little, and a Maya Wrap. The Maya wrap is awesome for all stages. I still use mine for my 2 year old and can continue to use it as long as she will stay in it. There are so many positions that you can use it in and it is so secure!
I used the Moby wrap with DD and it was the best money ever spent. When she got too big for that I bought the Boba, which is pretty much the same as the ergo for $99 and loved it just as much. With the ergo and bobe, your LO is right up against you where as the snugli and I think the one you are refering too, LO is sitting in a pouch and it really is not as comfortable for either of you.
As a PP said, you really do get what you pay for.
You already have a baby carrier in your closet. You can turn any flat bed sheet twin to full sized into a sling.
I usually use a twin bed sheet. I folded it lengthwise twice.
Then I do the same steps as this youtube video. Except I use a square knot.
In the past I have used a Hot Sling and a ring sling.
I currently use a Moby Wrap with my one year old. She loved it when she was a newborn. I paid around $50 for it.
The bed sheet sling was my first sling when I started baby wearing.

This is exactly what I was going to say. My aunt found me an Ergo carrier for less than $20 at a local consignment shop geared toward baby/kid things. It is definitely worth hunting around because you can find great stuff in good shape for a lot less!
I resisted getting the Ergo because of the price for way too long. I tried the Bjorn (hated it), tried the Infantino (ein), and tried the Moby (DS hated it). I finally borrowed a friends Ergo and DS and I both loved it! I still use it now and DS is 25lbs. I think it goes up to around 45lbs. I love it as both a hip carrier and a backpack at this point, but when DS was smaller facing me was his favourite place to take a nap.
I definitely think the Ergo is worth the price. I did spring for the Sport version though because I found it cooler (temperature wise) to wear.
I had the Bjorn too and hated it! Plus, with the Bjorn, LO hangs by their crotch which is supposed to be really bad for their hips, as well as seriously uncomfortable. If you're looking at carriers, look for something that positions baby in more of a sitting position rather than hanging.
I don't personally, but I've seen it mentioned on the attachment parenting board quite a bit. You might ask about it there.
I've got a Gemini and still use it. I also have a few friends who have the Butterfly II. It's essentially the same type of carrier as the Becco, just constructed a little different. After trying on a few different types at the store, I decided that this fit my body best and was the most comfortable. I still use it whenever I know I'll be taking J out of the carrier often throughout the day.
I have not personally used a K'tan, but it's similar to a stretchy wrap like a Moby. The benefit though is although baby is snuggled down like with a stretchy wrap there isn't as much fabric. It's two pieces that you put on instead of wrapping one length of fabric around you. Some people like it better specifically because there isn't as much fabric to deal with. It should give you a nice distribution of weight like with a wrap though.

so i had the infantino with DD and knew i wanted a better one for this next kid. this past weekend, i was garage saling and must have had a complete brain fart. i saw a baby bjorn and must have thought it was the ergo. it was 25 bucks which obviously would have been a great price for the ergo. only it wasn't.
now what do i do with it?!?! ugh.
