Women treated for gestational diabetes generally have smaller birthweight babies, leading to other problems, such as survival rate of premature and early births, particularly male babies.
that is the quote I pulled from Wikipedia (which I am assuming is totally wrong). So, leaving GD untreated is bad and treating it also is bad?
Re: This has to be a mistake: treating Gestational diabetes can lead to fetal death??+
Yes, you read it right. I controlled GD or per gestational diabetes can have unexplained fetal death, especially if their fasting numbers are high. Ive seen this a number of times in my practice, unfortunately. Most women who I encounter in triage, not my personal patients, had no idea this was a possibility.
The moral of the story is, watch your numbers.
well technically I see a low risk doctor at the moment, so I am not high risk, and my numbers are fine right now, so who knows. How off does a fasting number have to be to cause big concern? Like we meaure them in Canada as fasting should be 5.5 ..so when does it get to be a scary high number?
and yes I know wiki is not a reputable source, which is why I question it to begin with. My sister is type 1 diabetic and my mother is a RN specializing in diabetes and diabetes education, so I will be going to them for info, thanks.
Untreated GD causes large weight babies and other problems but I've never heard of properly controlled GD to affect the baby in anyway. Now, if you're medicine controlled, that could be different but if your diet controlled, there shouldn't be a cause for concern. I've already addressed your other post. How they do your numbers, it doesn't sound so bad to be .4 over but if you convert it to US numbers it is a big deal. Your fasting number should be BELOW 95 but your number was more around 105-110 which is quite high. Call your doc.
Let it be known...the risks and complications of NOT treating GD are much more dangerous for your LO than treating for GD. And seriously, don't use Wikipedia and get yourself all worked up.
