s/o bedtimes

My "bedtime" was 7:30 until I was in junior high.  I wish I was lying.  My mother knew damn well my brother and I weren't going to sleep but she felt very strongly that she should have some down time in the evenings so we had to go to our rooms to "bed."  My brother still talks about summer nights, sitting at his window watching the neighbor kids outside playing basketball in the bright sun.  I would beg my mother to tell my friends I was "out" or "in the shower" if they called looking for me because I would have died if she had said I was in bed.

Re: s/o bedtimes

  • Mine was 8ish until Middle shool, then 9 in Middle School, and then 10-10:30 in High School.  I always did my homework from 8-9 or 8-10 in High School because I had sports, then dinner, and then my favorite shows. If I had a lot of homework then I would start on it before dinner and then finish after diiner with no tv.

DD's Bedtime right now is 8, and I plan on keeping it that way til 3rd grade at least, if not later.

That sucks. I don't think I ever really had a bed time. Maybe when I was very young. As long as I was in my room around dark my parents were happy. They didn't care what we did as long as we weren't around (they weren't exactly shining examples of how to parent, though).

  • i don't recall ever having a bedtime.  like 9 or 10, probably.  whenever i was tired.

it's hard to enforce an 8pm bedtime for my near 4 year old in the summer, because it is light outside here until 9:30pm.  we have blackout shades in her room and do our best.  it's easier in the winter.

  • It was 7:30 until about 3rd grade. Then it was bumped to 8 or 8:30 until junior high. Once I started junior high... I don't remember. Maybe 9ish? I had to be in my room by a certain time, but like some of the others, I would read for a while before actually going to sleep.

  • Another loser in the Parent Lottery here. My father (my parents were divorced when I was nine and my dad had custody) didnt really care what time we went to bed, so long as we got up in time to make the bus.

God help us if we missed the bus on any given day. So no bedtime after the age of nine for me.

  • I went to bed at 9 throughout grade school.

Somewhere in middle school we stopped having bedtimes. I remember being up at like 4am when I was in 8th grade. I had to be in the house by 9 on school nights and 10 on weekends.

  • So you could have been outside w/ other kids playing and she'd be getting her "down time", but you had to be in bed?  That sucks.

I can't recall my bedtime, but I know it wasn't 7:30.  Cripes, thats when my 3.5 year old goes to bed.

I expect we'll have some rules around this, but I want to work with DS in figuring out when he needs to go to bed in order to be ready for the next day.
