So at my first appointment with my OB, he mentioned that because I was induced early with my son (due to pre-eclampsia) that he would prefer to induce me around 38 weeks this time, if I haven't gone into labor on my own. His reasoning was that I am at an elevated risk for it again, and the longer I'm pregnant, the more likely I will get sick.
My labor and delivery were just fine last time, but I have to admit I was a little surprised to hear that. I just feel like it might be jumping the gun a little to talk about inducing at my first appointment.
Re: Induce @ 38 weeks?
Twins born too early at 23 weeks due to incompetent cervix

IVF #3 BFP!!! IT'S A BOY! Born July 16th, 2011
FET #2 BFP! Due February 15, 2013
This. I'm not sure why they just wouldn't just start intensely monitoring you at this point, if anything. Talking about inductions at your first appointment seems like overkill on his part.

If you have doubts this early on about your OB supporting you I would look for a second opinion. I know preeclampsia is serious and you should definately keep watch of it reappearing in this pregnancy. It's know to come back with subsequent pregnancies. The thing is monitoring and encouragement is needed. This OB seems to want to just jump the gun and I would not be too pleased with that option.
Your doctor is getting a huge side-eye from me. Even with the most severe form of pre-e, HELLP, which I got, there's "only" about a 25% chance you'll get it again. The less severe your pre-e was, the lower the risk of recurrence in subsequent pregnancies. Even assuming a 25% rate of recurrence, I think it's absurd that your doctor would talk about an early induction at this point in your pregnancy. There is still a 75% chance (and that's very conservatively estimated) that you won't get it. Why should you agree to a non-medically indicated induction?
How about you suggest to him that you have close monitoring during 3rd tri, and if you start to develop pre-e again, then you can talk induction?
BFP1: DD1 born April 2011 at 34w1d via unplanned c/s due to HELLP, DVT 1 week PP
BFP3: DD2 born Feb 2013 at 38w4d via unplanned RCS due to uterine dehiscence
I'm with those who say seek out a second opinion. I think your instincts to be surprised are right on. I would probably look for another OB or better yet, a great midwife that delivers in a hospital, even if it's just for a 2nd opinion and not to switch.
Ditto. I was induced at 36weeks due to pre-e and if things go normally this time, I want to go as long as possible.
