Thoughts on Subway?

I am craving so badly a subway sub!  I usually get a turkey toasted and so it is warmed up.  I had one last night but man I want one for lunch!

Would you do it?

I've been craving Subway too, so I'd love to know the answer also.

YES!  I would definitely do it...  Cutting out deli meat completely is impossible - if you get it toasted then it should be ok!  (at least that's what I was told!)

  • Go for it!

My doc tells me to eat it if I'm craving it.  I do the same thing when on Weight Watchers - otherwise, I end up eating 16 points to get around eating the 7 pts of ice cream!

  • When I was pregnant with DD, a lady in my bmb e-mailed Subway's corporate office. They told her they do not recommend pregnant ladies eat any of their lunch mean sandwiches unless the meat has been microwaved until steaming. They specifically said the toaster does not heat the meat high enough to kill any dangerous bacteria that may be on the meats.

As always, it's up to you. I just thought it was interesting to hear their prospective.

  • A friend of mine said she ate subway all through her pregnancy. I went the other day but got a veggie with extra cheese.
  • My doctor said it was totally fine as long as its toasted, so I would go for it!

  • if its heated up go for it! if it isnt...I'd say having one here and there is not bad....there has only been like one case of listeria really reported in a long time and that was with someone in canada who wasnt pg...

my sister in law didnt cut out deli meat or soft cheese like blue cheese in any of her two pregnancies..she just limited the intake..

Subway is covering their @ss, at least that's my opinion.

I talked to my doctor about it and their practices' philosophy is this:

"If you're truly concerned about listeria, you should not eat meat, fruit, or vegetables. That's where listeria comes from, and the only sure fire way to prevent it is to not eat those things, so have fun drinking milk."

If you're getting the lunch meat from a reputable source (and my doc specifically said Subway and Jimmy Johns and probably your local grocery store) are all fairly reputable, and are eating it right away, go ahead.

The main thing is this...if you get sick and feel like you have the flu or are throwing up, see your doctor.  They can test for listeria, and more importantly, they can TREAT it.

  • I've eaten at Subway with all of my PG's I just asked them kindly to heat up the meat in the microwave for me, they'll do it no questions asked. My Dr told me the lunch meat had to be steaming hot.

  • Thanks!  Those were my thoughts exactly!  I figure toasted is good and I can have my cravings!

I normally eat the chicken there, and I occasionally get ham, but what ever I get 95% of the time it is toasted, regardless.... I Don't believe that any of us will get sick off of Fresh meat.  Our subway is always crazy busy, so there it no way possible that they have old lunch meat sitting around!

  • I would go get that bad boy!  Toasted you should be fine and even if it wasn't toasted I'd probably go for it anyway.

  • My doctor said she doesn't care if I even eat lunch meat cold.  I still don't, I think she's a bit too relaxed, haha.  But I have had a toasted sub this pregnancy!

  • We are having Subway for dinner tonight because it sounds really good.  I didn't have it all during my first pregnancy, but I've become way more lax about that stuff.

  • I am just NOT super-stressed about all the "rules."  If you watch Mad Men, you know that women used to smoke and drink martinis throughout their entire pregnancies!  :)

I enjoyed a salad with goat cheese today and didn't ask if it was pasteurized.  It was delish.  Enjoy your sandwich!

  • I am glad you asked this, because I have been wondering the same thing. I have been craving subway for a week, so I think I am finally going to get it for dinner!

  • I ate it with my DD, and I will eat it this pregnancy too.  The risk is listeria, and the risk is minimal.  If you are worried about it, just take the meat off before you eat it & zap it in the microwave.
  • I've eaten Subway once, Blimpe's twice, and Firehouse Subs once.  YUM!

    Do it.
