BDay Party Gift Etiquette

Hi Mamas!

Max's little friends are starting to turn 1! Screw wedding season - its BIRTHDAY  season!

-How much would you typically spend on a birthday gift for a 1 year old?

-If an invitation says "no gifts" do you not bring anything? I feel like I can't show up empty handed but I don't want to ignore their request. WDYD?

Feel free to hijack this post if you have a question too!!!

HI BABIES!!! Hope everyone is having a great day!

Re: BDay Party Gift Etiquette

  • I'm planning on spending $15-20. Maybe $50 for my nieces and nephews.

I don't know about the no-gift requests.  I find those totally annoying,  but I also don't approve of the people who suggest that I give to a charity instead of give a gift.

  • Not very close friend $20-25. Close friend $30-35.

If invite says no gifts, I would be inclined to take a card with a gift card to Target.

  • 1.  I think the amount depends on the friend.  A close friend I would spend $25-$30 (or maybe a bit less if it was a nice gift I was able to find on sale).  Otherwise probably around $20.

    2.  I think if they say no gifts, that means no gifts.  Maybe a nice card and if you really wanted something maybe an EE bond or donation to a charity.

  • 1. I am thinking around $20 to $25 and get them something they can use!

    2.  I get this but at the same time I don't.  Its a party maybe like PP said a giftcard ???  A friend of mine always gave the kids Shares for Disney and that was kind of cool...

  • Not so close friend- $10-$15.

    Close friend- $25-$50

Don-bring-a gift-people: I give the kiddo a book. I get it that some people dont want plastic toys, or dont want too many toys because they may not have much space at home, but books are educational, small, and I try to get recycled/eco friendly books. Win/win.

  • 1.  I would spend around $25

    2.  I'm totally going to get called out on this but I'm doing no gifts on DD's 1st birthday invitations.  She will be getting a ton of gifts from our immediate family, I just thought it would be way too much.  So, we are asking people to donate a baby item for our area food bank.  I'm asking if people want to bring something to bring jarred baby food, diapers, formula, etc.  Personally, I really am hoping people won't bring a gift.  For me it's really just a time to bring all of our family and friends together to celebrate DD's 1st birthday and the part they played in helping us.

  • 1. $10 - $25 depending on how well I know them, plus a book. I try to get the most for my money though.

    2. If it says no gifts, i still would bring an inscribed book as a card. It's kind our thing as a family.

  • 1. Our gifts tend to be $25.00 to $50.00

    2. I have never seen a party stating no gifts....That being said I would still bring a card with a gift card for the LO to Toys R Us Smile

  • I spend $10-20 because I feel most people go overboard on gifts. And I have been known to bring something small as a token if it says no gift, or make a donation to a children's charity in the guest of honor's name (Ronald McDonald house is amazing and really helped my parents when my baby brother had cancer, if you need a suggestion.)

  • I would probably spend about $15-$20 on a not very close friend, and $20-$40 on a close friend/family member.

I've never experienced a "no gifts" party, but I would respect their wishes.  If anything, I would get a book and a card.

Wish I could "like" this post! I wanted to do the same but my people threw a fit. Lincon is by no means deprived, though he does not have many toys. I just want to start him humble in life. Needless to say, I was out-voted!

  • 1. I'd spend about $20. More if it's a close friend or relative.

    2. I also get it and don't get it at the same time. I live in a condo, so space is limited and it's not like my kids need any more toys. Plus it's not like they're going to notice whether they get 10 gifts or none at all. BUT it's their birthday FFS - let there be cake - and presents!

Maybe call the parents and see if there's any bigger ticket item they need to buy their LO and give them a gc to help them buy it? You can always wrap the gc in a pretty box so the kid still gets to tear through the paper

On a side note: I HATE when people give kids presents in gift bags instead of wrapping them. Half the fun is tearing apart the wrapping paper. But maybe that's just me :)
