VBAC

are you taking a birthing class?

once we knew we were scheduling a csection all of the info learned at our birthing class went out the window...so i am finding myself anxious about being prepared for labor for my hopeful VBAC

is anyone repeating a birthing class or reading any books they find helpful?

Re: are you taking a birthing class?

  • I did not take another class but my hospital did offer a refresher class so you may be able to do that instead of retaking the original class.  I found that all of what I had learned 2 years previously came back to me while I was laboring plus my nurses really coached me.

  • I am switching hospitals so yes, I am taking the class there. Mainly I want to familiarize myself with this particular hospital and its practices.

I'm torn. I never took one with my first, and thankfully so after 24 hours of labor I had a c/s... I'm just not sure what to do this time.

  • Totally taking the class again!  I switched hospitals too, so I know I'll get the tour and all that good stuff at the class.  I'll probably take the breastfeeding class too.  I'm not sure why, since I'm still bfing my 18 month old at the moment, but I feel like a refresher on infant feeding could be a good thing.  If nothing else, it's good for DH to go to both!

  • I'm taking a preparing for birth with yoga class with my yoga instructor who is also a midwife.  I took a regular class the last time.  Not sure I want to sit through that again...

  • I took a class with a local childbirth instructor that was focused on giving birth without interventioins/pain meds.  I don't think it was necessary but it did help me feel more confident that I could have a VBAC, or at least that I wasn't crazy for trying.

  • I only read books to prepare mentally: Ina May's Guide to Childbirth, The VBAC Companion and Hypnobirthing.  I did take the hospital's birthing class for my first, but don't think it would have been any help for my VBAC.

  • Ditto books for preparation.  Ina May Gaskin for sure.  I am also liking Natural Childbirth after Cesarean by Crawford and Walters.

I have heard someone call hospital classes "how to be a good patient" classes, and I tend to agree.

  • I went to a VBAC prep class that was done at the hospital for free.  It was mostly stuff I already knew but it made me feel a lot better about my decision to birth at that hospital since they seem very supportive of VBAC.

I may be taking another VBAC prep class this weekend but the instructor is really flaky so I don't even know if the class is actually happening.

Otherwise I'm just reviewing my Bradley class notes from the first time, reading/re-reading books, and working with my doula.
