Hey gals, Im at a loss for how i will tell my boss about the pregnancy. We arent really close. I mean he gives me stuff i need to do, I then do it. Occationally he and i will discuss weekend plans or some personal stuff. but not too often. But I think the whole email idea might be too impersonal.. any thoughts?
(posted this on february 2013 baby board as well)
Re: Telling the boss.. Ideas please.

I walked into his office & I said. I'm pregnant.
He said, congratulations! When are you due? I guess I need to talk to blahblah about getting someone new in here before the end of the year to help with your work load since you will be gone a couple of months.
Me: Thanks! Jan, but you know I'm likely to go in Dec if this turns out like #1! I will let you know as things come up and I need time off.
End discussion. Oh and I told when I was like 6-7 weeks. If things come up, I needed him in the know already. And we aren't close at all.

When I told my principal about my other pregnancies I always had dates in mind of when I'd take leave. They were not going to hire a sub the next day, but it was nice for them to be able to write notes down and not have to chase me around later for info.
Also - a lot of my fellow teacher are friends with me on FB. I waited until I announced to my principal and director of el ed before I announced on FB. The director of el. ed actually said to me, "Oh, I'm glad you told me so I didn't have to find out through FB." Apparently, another teacher - announcing around the same time as I did didn't think about what was proper.
I thought this article was helpful:

Also, I just told my boss today (I'm 9 weeks). Just told him I needed to speak to him, said hey, I've been working a bit slower lately, its because I'm pregnant and really sick. He said congrats and asked how much longer I thought I'd be sick, then basically just said he understands and that I should hang in there. He wanted to know when I'd take maternity leave and also asked if I still felt safe working while pregnant (I work in a lab with chemicals). So all in all, it went really well. He did ask if the pregnancy was planned, which is hilarious. Try not to let the boss ruffle you--you've got rights as an employee and as a human being, you shouldn't feel bad about being pregnant.

I'm not really "close" with my boss but he is an entertaining guy. I told him I needed to talk to him, not in the office. He decided we take a walk around the WH. I like walks. I'm on a second(ish) shift right now and its in discussion to move me to an earlier shift. Basically I just asked "so you know how we've been talking about moving me to days? Think you can make this happen in...oh....9 months or so?"
I'd just talk with him. Make sure you tell him in advance though, I wouldn't spring it on em'. Good luck!
Yes! just throw one slide in the middle of a meeting
