Bottle sterilizers?

So DH bought a wonderful new house this year.  Its older, built in the 50's.  We've put a lot of work into updating it but one thing we haven't gotten yet is a dishwasher!  DH doesnt' want to spend the money for one (we have to re-do plumbing as well) just yet.  I've gotten used to washing dishes by hand :gasp: and have been doing fine with that.  BUT now, with the baby on the way I'm worrying about getting the bottles, etc clean enough without wasting time boiling water to sterilize them.  I've been researching bottle sterlizers and am wondering if anyone has tried them or has an opinion yay or nay....?

Re: Bottle sterilizers?

  • Ugh.  I hate hand washing dishes.  We were without a dishwasher in our new house for about a month and I hated it.  I hope your DH at least helps with the dishes.

  • I have a sterilizer by Dr. Brown for the microwave.  We don't have a dishwasher either.  I can sterilizer 4 bottles at 1 time.

Do you use the glass bottles?  If so can you use the sterilizer for those?

  • my friend also recommended the medela sterilizing bags as a must have item. you can also sterilize the breast pump accessories in the bags too. she says you really can use them 20 times per bag and they come 10 bags to a box. i got mine at target for around $5-$7. good luck!
  • I registered for the Munchkin sterilizer and got it! I was so happy I got it because I don't have a dishwasher either. I plan on putting bottles, pacifiers and breast pump parts in it.
  • ive never sterilized the bottles, hand washed or not. as long as you clean them well, i dont see the point.
  • I also registered for one, received it, and then took it back.  Many ladies on here have said that you can just boil the bottles and nipples the first time and just wash them every time after that.  Unless your kid is sick you should be fine with just washing them.  I have, however heard of the bags and will buy them, as they are a cheaper alternative to the big sterilizer.

  • I would buy medela steam bags!! They are AWESOME!!
