1st Trimester

Subchorionic hematoma

That's what I've got. The nurse called me this morning to tell me. I had my 1st tri screening this past Thursday, and the tech saw something on the anterior wall of my uterus just above the cervix. I knew something had been going on because I've been spotting brown blood for weeks (in case you weren't on the board Memorial Day weekend I'd posted about bright red bleeding and cramping; I now know it was a subchorionic hemorrhage, now just a hematoma). I'd been told for weeks "this is common, don't worry about it" but if you're anything like me, I needed an actual cause and not just a reassurance. So, now I know! She said my body should absorb the hematoma in time and I'm on pelvic rest until my 18w US. Poor DH! Wait, poor me too, I've been a horn dog lately!  So worth the wait though. It makes me wonder why it wasn't caught at the first US at 8w6d, it certainly would've prevented a lot of stress if I'd known earlier.

  • I'm glad you finally know what's been causing the spotting.

I had a SCH discovered at my 8 week u/s when I was pregnant with my second son, and it had resolved by 12 weeks.

  • I'm glad you have some answers!

I've been spotting for 10 days now and today passed a few clots and a little red blood.  Not I'm spotting again.  I'm hoping against hope that it's possibly a hematoma.  Going in today to get checked out.

  • This is a good reassurance for me as well! I currently have a subchorionic hemmorage and I can't wait until the brown spotting goes away!
  • I had the same thing!  I was diagnosed at Week 7.  I JUST came off pelvic rest this week - it was a dry couple of months! So glad that you know - I know that the spotting freaked me out everytime I wiped.  Fingers and toes crossed that everything will clear up nicely!

  • Depending on the placement, size and advancement of the u/s machine, they can be hard to find.

I started bleeding bright red with cramps at 6w, the SCH was found at 6w3d and I've finally been blood and spotting free for 2 weeks. I'm still on no lifting, stairs, excessive walking and pelvic rest until further notice. Hopefully just until the next u/s in 2 weeks.

A lot of doctors do suggest vitamin c and zinc in addition to your prenatal. The thought is that your amniotic sac is weaker at the source of the SCH, which puts you at a higher risk of pprom. Vitamin c and zinc have been known to increase the strength of the amniotic sac :)

  • I just found out (12 weeks) that my SCH is gone. Thank goodness! It can be pretty stressful, can't it? Mine was measuring only about 1.5 inches, so was never on bedrest, but as the baby is growing, I guess it just pushed it out and was reabsorbed. Good luck!
