Bouncing baby too much?

Sometimes when DD is really upset, the only thing that calms her down is bouncing her.  But sometimes it worries me and I think I might be bouncing too hard, but she stops crying.  Would she let me know if I was hurting her? I hate the thought that I might be too rough with her.  I don't do it with anger by any means, at all in the slightest.  I hope this doesn't turn into a flame worthy post btw.

Re: Bouncing baby too much?

  • I worried about the same thing because DS LOVED to be bounced and swung around. The pedi said you have to be intentional about it and it is unlikely to cause shaken baby syndrome accidentally.

  • For the first couple of months, DS only calmed down with VERY vigorous bouncing. We use the Happiest Baby on the Block ideas, and he stresses that the bouncing needs to be vigorous (and the swaddle tight and the shushing loud - he's all about intensity). You're bouncing, not shaking, and your intention is to calm her. You're doing the right thing.

  • I posted this question before. People were very reassuring. As long as her head & neck is supported you're probably fine.

  • Thanks ladies, I feel better. Maybe I should have finished happiest baby on the block...I suck at finishing books.  I also worry I pat her on the back too hard at times, but sometimes it's the only way to calm her with the shushing and bouncing.
  • Sometimes bouncing on the yoga ball is the only thing that calms/puts DS to sleep.

I wached the video, it was quick and nice to have visuals.

  • We rely on the yoga ball to bounce her to sleep on a daily basis, although it's getting much less frequent that we need to resort to it. As long as the head and neck are supported, you're good.
