2+ moms... Showing sooner and that ute size diagram

How do you think that diagram everyone keeps posting changes if it's not your first pregnancy?  I get that part of its bloating but I'm as big as I was at like 5 months with my first. The difference is huge. Do you think your uterus starts off bigger? Or does it just change faster?  I wonder how much pregnancy spacing matters, too.   I expected to show sooner but this seems ridiculous.

  • This is my third pregnancy, and i had my dating u/s at 7weeks. Im fairly small to begin with (5'1, 125lbs), and i had pretty big babies with my first two. My ob said at my dating u/s that my utuerus was already getting quite big for my gestation, so much so, she was sure there were twins in there..but nope, just one lil peanut!! So I dont know if it stays a little bigger from previous pregnancies, or just streches out faster and easier, but you deff pop a lot earlier w/ each one!!

  • My feeling is that after you have had a kid, your stomach and core muscles have muscle memory from the being stretched out the first time. So when pregnancy hormones start to rise again those muscles start reacting faster, hence looking like you are showing sooner. The ute is still about the same size, maybe a little bigger due to previous stretching, and it should still move up into abdomen at the same rate as the diagram showed.

  • I feel larger this time around than with either of my first two.  I sure as hell hope that doesn't end up being the case seeing as how DS2 weighed almost 12 pounds when he was born.  Hopefully it's just the muscle memory thing!

  • I feel bigger at this point than I did with my first, but if I'm honest, its just the extra calories.  My clothes still fit though...no maternity yet.

I'm the same size I was at 5 weeks, just bloated, but last night we found the baby's heartbeat with the doppler. It was further up than expected and way further to the side than I expected. My belly has been really soft ever since having DD so I wouldn't be surprised if I really start showing in a few weeks.

  • I swear I think my ute felt the implantation and was like "ok, let's get this party started!"  I know it's bloat right now, but I don't even remember the bloat being this bad before.  Oh well.  I'll bet if you are measuring a lot bigger they may do an u/s to check for twins.  Surprise

  • At 4 weeks, my uterus was measuring 6.

I think I read that the uterus pops up quicker in subsequent pregnancies.

I am definitely bigger now that I feel I should be.  I still fit in my clothes, but I am by no means comfortable.

  • At my confirmation appt at 5 weeks the NP told me you tend to show sooner in subsequent pregnancies because the uterus stretches and grows faster. When she felt my ute it was "measuring" about a week ahead. I've been in maternity pants for several weeks now, and not just because of the 5lb I've put on. I can't hide my belly anymore! I also noticed I've started having RLP already, which is something I didn't feel the first time around until later in the 2nd tri. I'm petite too (5'2" and 110lb pre-preg) so I dunno if that makes a difference.

  • I'm pretty "big" for only being 10 weeks. I think spacing, third pregnancy, and never fully losing the belly pouch all play a big role. Doctor says it's fine and normal. Just hate that I'm not the girl who just looks like she swallowed a bowling ball, haha.

  • I can feel my ute a lot sooner this time, just above my pelvic bone, but I'm not "showing" yet just bloated otherwise. My OB said my uterus felt around 10 weeks and that's what she would expect, so I guess you're uterus does stretch out quicker.

  • UGH! I came on here just now to post an almost exact post!!! Reassuring to read these posts. I feel like a beach whale already and i did not gain that much weight with DS so now I'm beginning to get a little concerned. I've already gone up a pant size!!!!

If you knew how lonely my life has been And how long I've been so alone And if you knew how I wanted someone to come along And change my life the way you've done

  • I don't know from personal experience, but I've had friends who were pregnant 1 week apart and the one was on her 1st and the other on her 4th, the one on her 4th showed like 2 months before the other one even started showing, (I know that body type plays a roll as well), but she also said she was showing faster with each baby, she said she thought it had to do with the muscles already having been stretched before, so the muscle memory thing...

  • Take a new balloon and blow it up. Keep in mind how difficult it was and how much air it took to get it to start the first time. Then let the air out and then blow it up again. It is way easier to fill it up the second time around and takes less force and air to start it. And it gets easier every time. Same idea as pulling on a new balloon to stretch it out before blowing it up the first time. Your uterus is compared to a balloon a lot.

  • I think it has some to do with spacing as well...

I am definately not bigger this time around...pretty much the same if you look at the comparable pics b/w these pregnancies.  However, it has been 4.5 years since I was pregnant...so I have had more time to adjust.

My SIL's friend, who is an OB, said that spacing does make a difference.

I believe it, this is my third pregnancy in less than 2 years.

  • I haven't been measured yet, but when my midwife found the HB at 10 weeks, it was half way up to my belly button. NOT behind the pubic bone. And my ute was retroverted. So...there ya go... at first she seemed surprised to have found it that high, but then she smiled, shrugged and said she guessed it was just how I was carrying this time.

  • I am definitely showing sooner this time around, I look right now the same as I did at about 15 weeks with DS.

I can feel my uterus when I am laying down, and the top of it is only about 1.5 inches below my belly button.  I could first feel it a little above my pelvic bone at about 10-10.5 weeks.

I also think that diagram is made for people with a longer torso, because my belly button is much closer to my pelvic bone than it shows there.

  • I am with you - I don't disagree with the uterus diagram - but I am definitely as big now as I was at 5 months with LO#1.  Everyone I talk to with more than one says they showed earlier with the second.  Bloat or not - it's there!

  • My boobs sure got the memo to expand early!  Holy hannah!
  • Yes I feel like I look more pregnant than I am too---we did spill the beans to everyone so at least I don't have to hide my growing belly but its pretty embarrassing to admit when I'm actually due because I feel like I look 4-5 months along.  So instead of saying the actual date I just say January that way they can just think I'm further along if they want lol!
