So DH and I get invited to a friend's beach house in Myrtle beach,so we go, of course. It a 300 mile drive, there was loads of traffic and it was 101 degrees out and on top of that I am pregnant and miserable, but I sucked it up cause I'm going to Myrtle beach, who wouldn't be excited?!
Well after an 8 hour drive, we finally arrive at his house (his house is on the Camp Lejeune base in North Carolina) and he was unbelievably drunk and rude. He didnt offer us a drink or anything after the long travel. He didnt tell us what room we were staying in (we kinda just guessed), didnt show us where the bathrooms were, or show us the house or anything. I kind of let that slide, since he was drunk, but still it was very rude.
The next morning, myself, DH and Friend decided to go to the beach. Friend makes DH drive the 2 hours to his beach house after we drove the whole day before in our gas guzzling SUV; whatever, I let it slide.
So, we are at the beach, everthing was fine and dandy, we were having a great time and decide to break for lunch. DH and I were under the impression that we were going back up to the house to make food since we were going out for dinner that night, no no, we go out to lunch and Friend makes DH pay and tip (which, was fine, we had no problem doing so, just unexpected after Friend saw how much gas was to get there) Finish lunch and wind down the day at the beach, I go back to the house and nap and when I wake up, we are ready for dinner. DH pulled me aside and told me that he is getting annoyed cause while I was sleeping Friend ask him to go to the liquor store and pick him up beer and ciggs, DH waited for Friend to hand him money, and, surprise surprise, nothing. Also while I was alseep Friend sat on the computer the whole time and didnt really talk to DH and he said it was very uncomfortable. Out at dinner, DH ends up paying AGAIN! And it's not like our meals were cheap, Friend ordered a lobster and DH a steak.
DH and I aren't mean people, we are very selfless and would give the shirt off our backs to anyone who needs it, I run a foundation for Gosh Sakes! However, when someone is well within the means of being comfortable, owns two houses and drives a Range Rover it's hard to imagine he can't afford beer and dinner.
DH and I ended up leaving a day earlier than expected, if we were going to keep our finances in good standings, we thought it would be for the best haha. I could NEVER imagine inviting someone into my home and treating them the way we was treated over the weekend. It was so uncomfortable and so rude, I just couldn't believe it! The pregnancy hormones may have made things seem worse than what they were, but DH assured me that it was pretty bad!
Re: what a terrible weekend.
Wow that is horribly rude!! I absolutely can't believe he treated you all so poorly after the long drive! I'm sorry you had such a bad weekend!!
Poor money management is actually one of my biggest pet peeves. DH and his best friend make the same amount of money - being military its easy to judge this - and I HATE how everytime we ask him to do something, the response is always 'I'm broke till pay day' - umm.. pay day was 4 days ago? It gets annoying fast.
My husband is military too and he had a friend like this. ALL THE TIME. He was a single soldier, living in the barracks...what the hell was he spending his money on? Oh, Jack Daniels.
I have a few friends like that too. I cannot live paycheck to paycheck. I don't know how people do it. My parent taught me the value of money at a very young age and I would not consider DH and my self rich by any means. But neither one of us had to take our a loan to go to school and I fully intend to remain debt free.
That friend does seem incredibly rude. How long have you known this guy?

I had a "friend" like this. I would pointedly say: ok your portion of the bill comes to $$. Or, if there is ever a next time, tell the wait staff you need two separate checks.
If I invited people over, I would never expect for them to pay for my portion of anything we did. If they offered, fine. But not expect it.
So sorry it ruined your weekend!
