Eating healthy during pregnancy

I just found out that I'm pregnant!! (5 weeks) I've been reading up on how important it is to eat 5 small meals a day that are high in carbs but wanted to get an idea of exactly what my meals should consist of (and portion sizes) so that I am giving the little seed growing inside of me all the nutrients it needs. :)  Suggestions of meal plans would be helpful!!

Re: Eating healthy during pregnancy

  • When I have m/s I try to eat something every two hours. Almonds, stick of cheese, yogurt, whatever. Otherwise, I eat when I feel like it and however much I feel like I need. For me, that naturally means smaller meals more often in the day. Healthy foods with plenty of fiber, and make sure you're getting enough calcium. Calorie wise, all you need is one extra glass of milk a day. It's not a lot more. I think one area many pregnant women fall short in is water intake (especially in the summer). Make sure you're pushing it on yourself. I know for me, I actually need more than I feel like I need.

  • There are a lot of books out there that help outline exactly what you should eat to naturally get all of the nutrients/protien/calcium/iron/dairy that you should. I am plus sized and reading Big, Beautiful, & Pregnant - and it has a whole chapter dedicated to healthy eating for pregnant women.

  • I think you should eat what works for you. If that means 5 small carb meals a day then go for it. If that means 3 meat meals a day, then do that. I had a friend who has so many issues with all kinds of carbs that she did Paleo through her last two pregnancies. Her babies are just fine. Actually, they have less issue than the first two. I don't buy into the idea that there is one standard for every pregnant woman on the planet. We all know we need vitamins, minerals and water. There are a variety of ways to go about getting them.

  • I have never heard to go high-carb. Pregnant women fall short on protein.  As PP mentioned, don't go crazy on the extra calories :)

I found the book What To Eat When You're Expecting (same brand as What To Expect When You're Expecting) on Amazon for $1 plus shipping. It has been really helpful and has some great recipes in it. That being said, I was very into eating healthy when I first got my BFP but then m/s kicked it! Now I eat what I can stomach (and unfortunately that hasn't included a lot of veggies lately) so it is important to take a vitamin everyday. I also like to buy juice with added calcium because that is something I never got enough of before being pregnant (not a huge dairy fan). And like a PP mentioned, water, water, water! I find I get dehydrated more quickly now.

  • Lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains... I eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner and a snack between lunch and dinner.  Normally I wouldn't eat the snack so that helps.

  • I'm trying to get all the healthy eating in now because with DD I had so many aversions that I just ate whatever I could stomach.  I wouldn't say carbohydrates are the most imporant thing, but you should be getting enough whole grains.  My go-to snack is half a peanut butter and banana sandwich on whole wheat bread.  I love edamame, those broccoli steam things for one, yogurt, cheese & crackers.  Ditto the others on water & keep up with your vitamins.  I take calcium & iron on top of my multi + DHA.  Have you made your first OB appt yet?  Usually your OB's office will give you literature on having a healthy pregnancy.
