If you did cloth diapers come in

hi!  was looking at zulily and they had adorable baby trend dipes on the site, and it made me think a bit more about cloth for this new one.  with kiddo daycare wouldn't do cloth, so i didn't really bother.  but now they will, so that's a major obstacle removed. so questions:

1. what was your favorite brand?  what was your "do not buy" brand?

2. what's a good starting amount of diapers/inserts

3. if you have daycare, how did you handle that part?

4. what did you use to clean? I already get cloth diaper laundry powder for regular laundry b/c of DH and kiddo's sensitive skins.

5. what did you use to keep your pail fresh, or did you do something besides a pail?

Please don't make me go to EFF!

    2. what's a good starting amount of diapers/inserts - 24-30 depending on how often you want to do laundry

    3. if you have daycare, how did you handle that part? - Take a diaper pail that they put the diapers in and pick up each day

    4. what did you use to clean? I already get cloth diaper laundry powder for regular laundry b/c of DH and kiddo's sensitive skins.  - Rumparooz need to be washed in regular All.

    5. what did you use to keep your pail fresh, or did you do something besides a pail? - Linseed Oil drops.

there's a cloth diaper board now?

    *dons cone of shame*

but i come by it honest-i can't access the bump boards except through the nest platform, so i don't have the side menu of bump boards.

  • My favorite affordable brand was the flip system. My favorite splurges were tth A12's on etsie. Star Baby and Mama Tutu were good WAH sellers.

At first you need about 8 to 10 a day. If you do laundry every other day you would need about 20. I don't let dirty diapers sit in the pail more than 2 days. So if you get the flip system you can get 3 or 4 covers and 20 inserts and be all set for a while.

    rockin green

just an antibacterial pail liner and a pail from target.

    1. what was your favorite brand?  what was your "do not buy" brand?

We have a combination of Bum Genius 4.0 and Fuzzibunz One Sized Diapers. I like them both for different reasons.  The BGs with the velcro are great for dads, grandparents and daycare folks who arent used to them, but they can be hard to get a tight fit on if you arent used to them or if you kid has a fat belly and skinny thighs.  The FBs I didnt love how much of a pain it was to adjust them (esp those first few months when they are growing so fast) and they can be confusing to someone not used to them.  That said I had way fewer leaks in FBs esp as DD got older with the big belly and skinny thighs.  Honestly your best best is to get a bunch of different ones and figure out what works best fo your kid.

    2. what's a good starting amount of diapers/inserts?

    25-30

    3. if you have daycare, how did you handle that part?

I sent a hanging wet bag that could hold about 10 diapers in it along with a daily supply of clean diapers.  I usually sent them about 7-8 a day when DD was really little and brough 1-2 spares at the beginning so they would always have extras incase.  Pick up the dirties in the wet bag each night.  You will need probably 2-3 wet bags for day care + any you need for your diaper bag + 1-2 larger ones at home.

    4. what did you use to clean? I already get cloth diaper laundry powder for regular laundry b/c of DH and kiddo's sensitive skins.

    We used Charlies Soap powder

    5. what did you use to keep your pail fresh, or did you do something besides a pail?

Nothing, I used the Planet Wise Hanging Wet bags for DD's room that zipped shut and just washed them along with the diapers every couple days.  As long as you keep the bag zipped it's no worse than a diaper pail.

  • Oh I also use dropp laundry pacs. So the first wash is a rinse with no detergent but a quirt of biokleen. Then I do a hot wash with either rockin green or a dropp laundry pac and that wash has a final cold rinse at the end.

  • I've CD'd 3 kiddos.

It's always hard for me to answer these questions because a LOT depends on what works for you.  We use prefolds and cheap covers with newborns, then one-size pocket diapers as they're older, and now I'm using prefolds with wool covers.  A LOT depends on the mood I'm in.

I always suggest newbs get a trial package and see what works for them before going all-in.

Which of the Dropps do you use? I'm kind of intrigued by cleaning products that come in a little packet like that.

    These from amazon.

I second this - we tried a bunch of different dipes and detergents , and not only is it going to vary by baby, but also by age - when he was younger I liked one kind of dipe, now I love another.

BUT some generic advice - stay away from the e-bay cheap diapers, they are a waste. find a local cloth diaper store - they are a wealth of information! I love mine because they have used stock too so you can try new things without breaking the bank, and will even take my gently used and give me store credit! And don't be afraid to improvise! I made some liners with some microfiber from Joanne's, and also some doublers when LO started to pee through the regular insert out of old towels and receiving blankets :)

    GL!!

  • My stash was a mix. However, I loved my bum genius 4.0's. I would send DD to daycare with enough dipes for the day and a few extra. I kept tabs on how many where there each night at pick up. I just sent in an extra large wet bag each day and took it home each night. I had about 24 pockets and a few bamboo doublers. I did laundry every other day or every third day. I used rockin green detergent. I had a reusable pail liner in a trash can. I just put some baking soda in the pail.

  • 1. what was your favorite brand?  what was your "do not buy" brand?

Don't buy Happy Heinies! I bought a ton of them with DS1, and the elastic wore out and they stopped absorbing after awhile. I'm still annoyed that I wasn't able to use them with DS2 for very long...

    2. what's a good starting amount of diapers/inserts

We did a diaper service with DS2, and it worked out well - we just needed covers and snappis to hold them on. It also didn't matter how many he went through those first few months. Once I switched him over to the pockets, I think I had about 18-24 for him (he was about 2-3 months), and I did diaper laundry every other day.

    3. if you have daycare, how did you handle that part?

    n/a

    4. what did you use to clean? I already get cloth diaper laundry powder for regular laundry b/c of DH and kiddo's sensitive skins.

Charlie's Soap, and BioKleen once in awhile. I would do vinegar rinses sometimes, too.

    5. what did you use to keep your pail fresh, or did you do something besides a pail?

We just used a kitchen-size garbage can without a top, and a diaper bag. The whole thing, bag and all, goes in the washing machine, so you don't have to touch anything. It very rarely got stinky, pretty much only if it had been more than three days since we had done the wash.

Seriously, see if there's any diaper service companies in your area - it might a good trial for cloth, and then you'll have time to buy your own if you really like it. hth!

  • We use a mix of brands, mainly AMP and Kawaii pockets. Our daycare really appreciates the Velcro closures since they're faster so we have I think 10 of those but all others are snaps. For daycare, we send enough for the day in her wetbag, I put them in her diaper area in the AM and they put the used diapers back in the wet bag for me to take home at night. No problems with this system yet! As far as no-no brands, we started out with g-diapers and they are terrible - don't listen to the marketing, they're way more work than "real" CDs and leak way worse. We use either rockin green or charlie's soap and line dry. Have a large wet bag hanging on the back of her door for used diapers, doesn't smell at all that i've noticed. We wash every 2-3 days. Sorry about no paragraphs - on phone :(

I just wanted to say that some of my favorite pockets are the cheapies off of eBay (Kawaii & Sunny Baby come to mind.)

I'll second that, I have 5 Kawaii snap diapers that I love. I forgot to mention them but they are great and at like 8 bucks a diaper for a one sized pocket diaper it's hard to go wrong with them.

  • 1. We use BumGenuis 4.0. They've worked wonderfully so we've never tried anything else.

    2. We started with 24 diapers. We have 27 now and can go 3 - 4 days between washing if we have to (which we never do)

    3. We just asked upfront if they did cloth. They said as long as we supply them, they'll change them. He is in DC for about 6 hours/day so I pack 3 - 4 diapers and a wetbag.

    4. After trial and error, I've found that I like Rockin' Green the best. Plus sun bleaching for stain and odor removal.

    5. We just have a regular garbage can in the garage that we line with a large wetbag. I don't keep the lid on, it actually smells less that way.

  • 1. what was your favorite brand?

I agree with PP about using different systems for different ages/fits/preferences. I love prefolds with covers and AIO's for the NB stage. Then we used mainly pockets for a long time (BG and Kawaii, we like both). Now I do about 50/50 pockets and fitteds. I think a trial is absolutely the way to go for beginners. I didn't take that advice, and I ended up having to sell a bunch of one brand that didn't work for us. It's just the best way to see what brands fit your baby right, and what works best for you. Granted, what works now may change as your baby grows.

    2. what's a good starting amount of diapers/inserts

I think 3 dozen is a great stash, and 2 dozen is the least amount I'd be comfortable with. I'm sure you could get by with less if you wash every day, but I like to have enough that I can go at least 2.5 days if I need to.

    3. if you have daycare, how did you handle that part?

    4. what did you use to clean? I already get cloth diaper laundry powder for regular laundry b/c of DH and kiddo's sensitive skins.

I use Tide and/or Rockin Green I had problems with Tide our front loader, but it took a crap last month and I ended up getting a new top loader (score). Both detergents seem to be fine now.

    5. what did you use to keep your pail fresh, or did you do something besides a pail?

I bought the Rockin' Green pail freshener, but it doesn't really seem to do anything. Kind of a waste.
