Would you do this? Someone just showed me a picture of his adult son and DD on a jet ski. She is 20 months old and wearing a life jacket. My first thought was "no fuckings way." Am I being over protective?

No. Just no. I don't think you're overprotective. I think you're smart and right to think that way.
I can't judge. Maybe they were just posing for a picture. DD wears her lifejacket anywhere near the water so they could've easily just put the kid on at the end of the dock, snapped the picture, and handed her back off.
It was an obvious action shot, but I did ask. Nope, she went for a ride.
kind of unrelated, but why the hate on jet skis? i've never considered them to be instruments of death. of course, I hang with mature and responsible lake people who have spent most of their lives on the water doing water sports, and we all side eye (and avoid) idiots. I can't ride them anymore, even at our usual slow speeds, because it jostles my back too much (i.e. I'm old now). I would never ride one on the ocean or even on choppy water, so maybe that's why my view is different?
risk wise, i think putting kiddo on the jet ski (if we rode it anymore) with me and her dad and taking a slow cruise around the bay (empty) is more risk averse than being on a boat in the middle of the lake (not empty). My #1 concern is always other boaters/skiiers/etc, not my own water vehicle. but then again, i won't even go to the lake on holiday weekends anymore b/c of the proportionate # of idiots on the water, so...

I kind of agree. That being said, I still think 20 months is still ok young.
No and I judge. My BIL will put his 20 month old on a dirt bike with him, with a helmet and I judge the shiit out of him. The ground they ride on is rock, cactus and bull nettle. Baby doesn't need to be on it.
now, that, i judge. that and 4 wheelers. i see no need for any of it. in laws like to get kids 4 wheelers starting at age 5.
I don't think I would, but I will say, I've seen people at the lake do this a lot.
I've never really thought much of it, because they are always going slower than a pontoon boat.
I have taken my 20 month old on a sail boat. I held him while DH sailed. Is this judge worthy?
No, I don't think so. Betsy has been sailing as well, and she goes out on our center console boat and our little john boat all the time.
I think jet skis are more dangerous than boats of any kind. They're less stable, less substantial, and in general (I'm stereotyping here based on my personal observations) the people that drive them are pretty reckless.
We did it at the keys. J was exactly two years old. I'm okay with it. I obviously drove slower with him then when by myself. I've also had him out on boats and the water since he was 3 months old.

This. I'm sure we'll take a quick picture of DH and J before we go ride on vacation.
Edit: Nevermind, I judge because it was an action shot. Not ok, IMO.

My son was on the Seadoo at 13 months. And by on the Seadoo, I mean with it just barely in gear moving slower than molasses in shallow water. But moving at any kind of speed? No way.
I don't really see the problem if you're driving super slow and not whipping b!tches. I would let my toddler ride on a snowmobile with grandpa too.
This is my view too, but here there are quite literally zero lakes that I would even consider bringing a jet ski too.

Unpopular opinion...but yes I would let my daughter (14 months old) go on a jet ski. Of course she would have her life jacket on and she'd be riding with me or my husband. I see no problem in taking her on a slow ride around the dock area, it's a no wake zone so there wouldn't be anybody else zipping along near there.
We are pretty laid back about letting DS do things but I would never let him ride on a jet ski. I consider it the same as letting DS ride on DH's dirt bike, not going to happen for a long time.
We did this with our 2 year old at Lake Gaston. She was in the middle of me and DH and we only went right out by our dock and pretty much zero speed. We would never take her onto the lake at any sort of speed but staying by the lake house where no other traffic really is didn't seem to be a problem.
I'd let DD get on the jet ski with DH. He'd take it pretty slow and we'd definitely make sure it was in an area where we had open space and no other boats around us. She'd have on a life jacket and she'd probably freak out. She seems to be much less adventurous then we'd like her to be, lol!
Re: 20 month old on jet ski
This doesn't seem like a good idea unless. . .

My IL's have a sail boat and I can't wait until we can take C out for trips on it.

MH gives P a ride on the lawnmower and 4 wheeler all the time but it's usually just in circles around the yard.
