Summer reading list ?

Are the going into Kindergarten and going into first grade books usually books the kids can read on their own or books to be read to them?  I have not seen the books in person but am want to get some new books for DS to read from the library, he is going into Kindergarten and ready pretty well for his age/grade.  I read the list from his future school today and have no idea what level these books really are.  Thanks

Re: Summer reading list ?

  • My guess is that the K list will have a combination of books that parents would read and books kids could attempt themselves.

The first grade list would have everything from very easy to read books up to easy chapter books.

If your son can already read easy reader books on his own, the grade 1 list is probably your best bet.

  • We were not given a summer reading list before kindergarten, and we don't have one for 1st grade either. Even throughout kindergarten we were encouraged to pick books that our child was interested in and read to them. The goal at this age is to get kids interested in books.

  • We weren't given a list to read before K. They gave us a list of suggested books, but it wasn't required.
