I have an appointment scheduled for this week with my midwife. The person making the appointment told me they may do an ultrasound then (which seemed really early to me, but whatever-not my call to make). When I called to reschedule today (because DH will be out of town and doesn't want to miss an u/s) the girl I talked to this time said they would only do one if there was a problem like bleeding, lack of heartbeat, or if I'm high risk (which I'm not). This makes more sense to me, but I'd hate to get the first u/s without DH there.
Did your provider do an u/s at 11-12 weeks?
Re: u/s at 11-12 week appt?
No u/s at my 12-week appointment but got to hear the heartbeat! It was nice and strong. I won't get another u/s until 20 weeks.
We had an inital vaginal u/s at the first appointment at 10 weeks.
We are higher risk since it's multiples - and had an official dating u/s today at 12 weeks 4 days since the midwife couldn't date them with her u/s.
I think it's more of a personal Dr preference. They might do the doppler that early and if they can't locate the heartbeat maybe they'll do an u/s. Personally my H goes to all my appointments with me. If possible I'd bring him just to be safe. GL!
with my first son I went to a doctor who did ultrasounds every visit,,, it was wonderful to see him each month and have that reasurance that he was growing well inside me.....
with my second son I decided to go to midwife but she only did 1 ultrasound thru the whole thing.... this was incredibly hard on me because I was not able to see my son each visit and I was going thru some mental turmoil at the time so to not see him every visit added to the stress I was under... even when i requested another one, they wouldnt do it... it was such a bummer for me.
so now with this pregnancy, Im going back to my first doctor so I can have that monthly view of my precious gift, and have that mental reasurance that I need.
Most likely the plan will be to try to hear the HB with a doppler, then if they cannot find it to do an u/s at that point to confirm that everything is still okay and that it's just a little too early to hear it via doppler. Most of the time my OB doesn't even like to attempt a doppler until after 12 weeks.
For our 11-week u/s my OB had already tried unsuccessfully with a doppler on a couple of other patients that day that were around 11 weeks, so he went straight for the u/s and didn't bother trying it with me.
I am going in today for a doppler appointment, but at this point we should have no problems hearing it...I hope.

Drs who do an u/s every visit is just scamming you and your insurance company for money, I know it was probably nice but unless you are high risk or their are issues they really are unnecessary that often. A lot of insurances now won't cover a lot that's why they are limited.
