If you did BLW, what were the first foods you gave your DC?

Hi ladies,

I'm a lurker who plans on doing BLW with my DS in the next few weeks (he's almost 25 weeks, VERY interested in food and can sit up on his own).

I apologize if this has been asked, but what foods did you start with?  For TW, they suggest to only introduce one food at a time to see if there are any issues, but isn't that tough with BLW?

I did read Baby-Led Weaning, but was hoping for real life experiences.

  • We did not wait days between foods.

    We started with banana, sweet potato fries, and cucumber.

  • We did not wait between foods either.  We started with some toast with avocado, some broccoli, and some shredded cheese...
  • Well, she was sucking on an apple pretty early, but the first real substantially-eatable foods were sweet potato fries, pears (skinned), banana, and roasted carrots.  We did originally wait a few days between the first two or three foods, then I got annoyed at that and stopped doing it. :)

  • What's TW?

    If you your DH don't have any food allergies, and your families don't have any, I wouldn't stress about feeding things one at a time.

    My kids loved avocados, bananas, soft ripe fruits, roasted veggies, toast, broccoli. Cutting things into finger-like sticks works well, too. Roasted fish is great bc it falls apart so easily, as is mashed egg. I would mash it with a ton of butter and/or olive oil first, so it isn't crumbly. And we'd thicken yogurt with mashed banana or prunes to make it easier for them to eat it on a spoon.

    Good luck! It can be messy, but I think it's easier in the long run.

  • Her first food was avocado, but then the very next day we went out to lunch and she stole half my coleslaw. She was basically just sucking the dressing off. I feel like true BLW should be baby led and therefore I let her choose what foods she wants to try (within reason). I try to eat only things I'd be willing to let her eat during this period.

    If I'm feeding her when I'm not eating it's things like bananas, toast, quesadillas (right now), homemade frozen waffles etc.

    We aren't worried about food allergies so we don't wait between foods. Our pediatrician is fine with that, especially since it's our second child.

  • We didn't wait either. His first food was technically ham since he stole it off a plate.

    But we started with bagels, he would gnaw on mine. Then it was apple chunks.

    And after that, he just ate whatever we were eating.

  • We also didn't wait between foods. His first week he had apple, pear, pork, mango, squash. Pics and details here.
  • His first meal was sausage, pancakes, and green beans.  We didn't wait between foods, just offered him whatever we were eating.

  • Well the first thing DD ate was an apple bran muffin. That was not planned. She was sitting in my lap while I was eating and she took it and put it in her mouth before I even realized. That was at about 5 months. After that we did avocado and mango and we quickly progressed from there. We didn't wait or follow any rules other than using as much unprocessed food as we could to avoid the salt and other additives.

  • Thanks so much ladies! As a FTM, I other think things a lot.  I'm allergic to eggs, so we're going to wait until after a year to start those, but I appreciated your suggestions on other foods to try!

    He loved the avocado (tomatoes and plums, not so much!)
