Question about TTC and prescription drugs

So. Given my life and what it's generally like, my wisdom tooth extraction couldn't just have been simple, right? Smile So I've developed a dry socket, which hurts like needles being stuck into my jaw from all directions. I saw the oral surgeon this morning, and he has me back on narcotics - I'd gone off them yesterday, 72 hours after the surgery, because I don't like the way they make me feel. I was taking Ibu.pro.fen only. Anyway, I'm only taking 1/2 the recommended dose (1/2 a pill every four hours or so of Per.coc.et, but it still makes me super drowsy.

On to the actual question: as you guys know, we're planning on TTC starting this month. The question is, when would it become unsafe to take the meds? I can take either Per.coc.et or Vi.co.din. Is one better/safer than the other? The oral surgeon said it would be fine until actual conception, but I'm not sure whether the meds would affect my egg/egg production. Thoughts?

You definitely don't want to take ibuprofen or other NSAIDS (aspirin, naproxen) at all starting CD 1, as they can make TTC more difficult.  In this one regard, the narcotics are actually the better choice and you can take them up to conception. They don't interfere with contraception in the way that NSAIDS do.

For regular OTC pain relief when you're TTC, we were told Tylenol is the better choice.

If you're past CD1 and have already taken ibuprofen though, don't sweat it.  Just try to stay away from it the best you can.

I know all this because I take both Rx naproxen and Rx narcotic painkillers, so my doc and I discussed this all when we first discussed TTC, back when we thought I'd be the one to carry.

  • Are you using a RE: if so just ask them but I am pretty sure what  HLKE said is on spot NO NSAID at all only tylenol if you must !!!!! You can lookup drugs on the https://www.americanpregnancy.org/ i think.

Thanks, hlke and 2moms! No we're not using an RE, so we can't ask. hlke, do you know whether there's a better choice between Per.co.cet and Vic-o-din? The oral surgeon said the latter is less strong, so I'm thinking of going with that... Thanks again  for your input!

It shouldn't matter much for TTC, but if you don't like the feeling of narcotic drugs, try the Vic.o.din first.  But if you are still in pain, you can move up to a higher dose of the Vic.o.din or change to the Per.co.cet.  Biggest side effects of both are nausea and constipation, so try to take it with milk or food and add a stool softener (Co.lace or docusate sodium) if needed.

Both drugs have acetaminophen, the generic for Tylenol, in them, so you need to be careful not to take too much total acetaminophen.  The total should be less than 4000 mg.  Vic.o.den has a pretty high Tylenol dosage (500mg per pill) so you usually don't take any OTCs when you're on it.

Pharmacists are also great people to answer questions - they know everything about the meds.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  • I can't speak about pre-conception, but DW was prescribed Vicotin when she was 16 weeks pregnant due to severe round ligament pain. The docs said it was a safer pain killer...I don't know how it comares to Percocet.  Thankfully, she only had to take one.

    Good luck!!

  • My RE has not seemed particularly concerned about anything that happens pre-IUI, but I've never asked her about narcotics.  Sorry about the dry sockets.  One of my incisions from my wisdom tooth extraction got infected, and it was long, drawn out, painful and disgusting.  Also had to be on the Vicodin for quite a while -- but it was a few months pre-TTC.

Thanks, ladies. ball.and.chain, this friggin' tooth hurts like crazy, and the oral surgeon gave me a paste today that's supposed to help. I put it in the ridiculousness of a hole I have in the back of my mouth, and it tastes like a dinosaur took a dump in my mouth. alksjlkajlgajkljsglajsgljka

Ha! Well, when you start life at 9 lbs, 4 oz..it's not too hard to get that big:)  I'm looking forward to his 2 month appointment on Friday so we can see how much he weighs now!

Some days, he looks like such a big boy...other times, I hold him and think how tiny he is!
