Exercise vs. Breastfeeding?

I have read and heard that too much exercise can effect your production of milk. Does anyone know what would be appropriate exercise so I wouldn't see a decline in my milk production. I will be going the first of July for my 6 wk pp and plan on talking to the Dr, but I would love to start something to start loosing this weight. I seem to have plateaued and still have a good 20lbs to go.

With DS#1 I supplemented and BF so was able to hit the elliptical and exercise videos and was able to drop the weight pretty easily. I have been walking and trying to cut back on sugars, but my weight has not budged for 3 weeks. I still want to EBF LO so any suggestions or advice would be great!

  • With my last ds I could do anything just start out slow and make sure you drink a ton of water and keep your calories up.

You can definitely exercise while EBF.  I trained for and ran a bunch of 5Ks while my first daughter was exclusively breastfed.  I also trained for and ran a half marathon when she was 8 months old, so she was eating solids but I was still breastfeeding 4-5 times a day.

I definitely agree with PPs that the most important thing is to make sure you are hydrated.  Take your work outs slow at first, drink tons of water, and you'll be fine!

  • I've been exercising for 4 weeks now and haven't had problems. Just ditto what PPs said about getting plenty of water and making sure you eat enough calories
