Re: Pets & Los

  • I have two cats that are 19 years old, and one is becoming more feeble.  G went through a period where she was hitting them and pulling their tails, but that seems to have passed.  I worked with her all.the.time about "nice kitty" and showing her "nice touch" by having her stroke her forearm, and then putting her hand on the kitty and practicing "nice kitty".  She says "nice kitty" when she pets them, and it's nicely most of the time these days, plus she now loves hugging the nicer cat.  I imagine there will be numerous phases with her and the cats.  I love my cats -- they've been my babies for 19 years -- but I'm done with all the throw up, pooping outside the litter pan, etc.  I don't think they'll live much longer, and I don't think I'll get any more pets for awhile.

  • Poor kitty!!  We have dog that we are *gasp* trying to rehome.  I know there are lots of opinions on that, but she absolutely hates small children.  When the dog growled and nipped at the baby multiple times, we decided to find her a new home. And yes, we have tried training and all the other methods.  She's just a grouchy dog.  She has been since she was a puppy (at which time we took her to training classes too!)Hopefully, we can find her a nice place before newbie comes along, but for now she's contained to the kitchen/laundry area behind a baby gate.

We also have a golden retriever who is awesome!  He's big enough to sit on Nate if he gets too rough, but in general he could care less if Nate beats on him/pulls his ears/whatever.  He and Nate are best buddies.  Nate is pretty gentle usually with animals though.  We've taught him how to gently pet the dogs and to use one finger for smaller animals.  My parents have bunnies and quail that he likes to pet with his finger.  He's a fairly gentle kid (luck of the draw I guess!  I bet the next one will be complete opposite!)

  • We have a 3 yr old tabby too!  He's a sweetheart and takes the ridiculous amount of abuse DD heaps on him without much complaint.  He has occasionally nipped at her, but 99% of the time she's completely deserved it and has been told by me to stop or to be more gentle, and he's never actually broken the skin.

Most of the time they play in harmony.  She knows how to play with his feather on a string toy (granted she hits him with a bit too frequently) and he likes it when she pushes him around in a box that he's sitting in.

Hahaha!  My kid tries to "play golf" with our cats too!  They are pretty good about running away, with the exception of the sneak attack.  How a toddler with a golf club manages to sneak up on a cat, I will never understand.

Otherwise, they all do pretty well together.  One cat lurves her, and they are best cuddle buds!  The other ones just hide if they aren't in the mood for toddler love.  haha

  • We have one dog. He's about 4 years old and 75lbs.

For the most part they get along ok. DS LOVES trying to play with the dog. His favorite thing to do after dinner is to run all over the house with DH and the dog chasing each other and throwing toys down the hall for the dog to fetch.

Lately DS has been getting down on all fours and putting his head down and kinda trying to ram into the dog to get him to play with him. It usually ends with the dog licking DS' face to death and DS just laying there cracking up. It's pretty much the cutest thing ever.

But there are times when the dog just doesn't want to be bothered. And when that happens he just scratches at the back door and we let him outside to get some space from DS for a while. We've also been pretty good about making sure DS knows that when the dog is laying down/sleeping in his dog bed that's in the back corner of the living room (kinda hidden behind a recliner) that means the dog doesn't want to play/can't be touched.

  • I have two cats, one is about eight years old and steers clear of Em. She's never been a cuddly kinda cat and Em thinks that's what all soft furry things are suppose to do... act like her teddy bear.

The younger of the two cats though is in co-hoots with Em I just know it. They have their own way to greet each other. The youngest cats newest trick is keeping up the baby to play at night when she should be going to bed.

Ugh.  DD is obsessed with our dog.  He makes her so happy it's adorable, but the feeling is not mutual.  He's starting to get older, and he's been very spoiled his entire life, so having this little person around is not what he was hoping for.

She follows him around constantly.  If he's just sitting there, she needs to sit on/beside him and leans on him or hugs him.  Usually he just walks away.  When he's in his basket sleeping, she's constantly going to see him, bringing him her toys, milk etc.  It's cute to a point, but then she starts touching his eyes, putting her hands inside his mouth or poking his ears and he gets irritated.  I try to encourage "gentle" (and then she just thumps him on top of the head) or remove him from the situation - either putting him on our bed, downstairs behind the baby gate, or outside.  I feel like it's a constant battle keeping her away/gentle with him.  I can't wait for this stage to be over...
