Babywearing while traveling? WDYT?

On the soft carriers and slings that I have seen, they mention that they are not for use while in the car or while seated.  Is this because the baby has potential of suffocating?  We are taking a long plane trip when the babies will be about 2 months and I was thinking that wearing them might be an option, but not sure about it.  WDYT?

  • I've flown with my baby quite a bit, first time when she was just 7 weeks old.  My wrap conversion ring sling is by far the best on the plane. You can feed them in it, they sleep, and when they're older they can play in it.  We've been on many flights and my now 7 month old hasn't cried on a single one...no fussing, no crying, even on the 6+ hour flights.  Babywearing is the best, you can even do tandem carriers in a sling with twins.   I wouldn't use a ssc because they're not as versatile as a sling, esp. when in a seated position.  Good luck and congrats!

  • I can sit just fine with LO in my Moby.  I don't think I have ever done it for an extended period. If you are concerned, you can always take your LO out during the flight and hold LO, then put him/her back in the wrap or sling just before landing so you are hands free to deal with luggage.

This sounds great.  Where do you recommend getting a wrap conversion ring sling? And how you mentioned with twins, do you mean two slings, one across each shoulder?

    Thanks!

  • Just so you know, you typically can't wear them during take off and landing (this is a safety issue, if something were to happen someone needs to be able to grab the baby away from you if you are incapacitated). If you are on an intercontinental flight you may be able to get a bassinet for the babies. And another thing about flying with twins, you can't have two lap babies in the same row (not enough o2) masks.

You can get them at either sleeping baby productions (Jan makes them) or PAXBaby.  If you email Jililan at PAXBaby, she'll be able to help you, she's really awesome.  Yes, you wear two slings, one on each shoulder.  It looks like this with twins:

  • And yes, while you are technically not supposed to wear your babies during landing/takeoff, not one FA has asked me to remove mine.  We've flown Delta, United, AA, SW and Air Tran and she was attached to me the entire time.  It's all up to the FA!
  • I've flown 18 times with my 8 month old (first time when she was 7 weeks). When she was smaller I used my Moby wrap and everything was good. Now I carry her on in her Ergo. It is MUCH easier to fly with a baby than you think.

  • The couple of times that we were on a plane with LO, we have had him in the Ergo.  I did wear him the entire time, and the FA never commented.  Also, I think that PP had an excellent tip about the RS from SBP.  I love mine, although I find that it throws my neck out (I have two spinal injuries, though).  I think that it would be even more comfortable with two on, actually.  They are fairly inexpensive as well.

Be advised, that when the babies are little, they can suffocate in any carrier due to positional asphyxia (sp?).  It is very important to learn how to babywear safely, but as long as you follow the guidelines out there, you should be fine.  When I bought my RS from Jan, she included detailed instructions on how to position the baby in the sling.  HTH!

  • When DD was older, able to hold her head on her own, I use to wear her while sitting in church. I used my gemini in the hip hold.  It made things a lot easier because she was not moving around to get down on the floor.  I don't think I would have done it when she was small due to fear of suffication.
