What are some things you found useless or a waste of money for your last child?

Hey ladies just curious what are somethings us Moms who already have kids found were either not used alot or all the last time around?

Mine are the diaper genie and the baby monitor I used them each maybe 2 times.

  • I think everyone will be very different on this. I wouldn't have survived without the monitor and while I agree you don't need the actual Diaper Genie, I liked having a closed trashcan in the nursery.

I don't think I owned anything that was a total waste, but I never felt the need to have a wipes or bottle warmer. We use the keurig to get quick hot water.

  • I never got one, but I just can't understand them...Wipe Warmers.  Seriously.  All you are going to do is spoil your baby at home so when you have to use wipes, straight out of the pack, in public your baby is going to be miserable!

  • Mine was the Bumbo. DS hated it. I also started with a cheaper baby carrier which was totally uncomfortable so I ended up giving in and spending more than I originally wanted to, but it was definitely worth it.

  • I'm another one who didn't really use the Diaper Genie. This time, I'll just have a regular trash can and empty it out daily.

My mom swears by the wipe warmer, but I am not a fan. I don't like how they tend to dry the wipes out, and it's not like I have a wipe warmer I take outside the home [although I think there are portable ones].

If you take the wipe out of the package and rub it quickly in your hands, it warms the wipe keeping the baby more comfortable.

My sister was a wipe-warmer user at home, and this is what she did when they weren't home, and this satisfied my nephew. Actually, when I worked in a daycare nursery in college, I did this trick just overall and it made diaper changes far more pleasant for the baby (and me!).

That is genius...I'm not sure that would have ever occurred to me on my own!

  • Ditto the Bumbo. I sold it.

It's not safe to put up on tables, etc. (even though people still do)... a client of mine's baby was seriously injured when the Bumbo tipped off of their kitchen island and I found it to be pretty useless.

Also never got a wipe warmer but they seem totally useless. My son never freaked out because of a cool wipe, haha.

I'm there with you all on the Bumbo, only because DD was so chunky that at 5 months her legs were getting stuck, so we only really used it for about a month.  Although, I was a nanny during DD's first year and the Bumbo was great for the other baby.

doesn't the water get really hot ( if it does I'm sure you let it sit I'm not questioning that ) or do they have temperature adjustments?

  • I must be in the minority in terms of wipe warmer and motinor usage. DD is a late fall baby so the wipe warmer was perfect during really cold days. And we could have not survived without my screen monitor. We moved DD to her own bedroom at about 8 weeks and it was easier to see her thru the screen and feel comfortable that she was ok. Items I didn't use: sleeping sack, must agree with other post, Gerber clothing as the size is super tiny, I didn't make too much use of the swing and the babyBjorn carrier.

You can adjust, but we were using it to defrost breast milk or reheat cold formula moreso than using the water to actually make the bottles.

  • Few things went to waste with us, but one of them was the bottle warmer.DS rarely took bottles & the warmer would never heat the BM to the right temp. It was so much easier using water on the stove.

Another was the bumbo. By the time DS had enough head strength to be able to use it, his thighs were too fat &he'd get stuck in it! You could wedge him in easily enough, but when you'd go to take him out, he'd have a bumbo stuck to his ass.

Another was the bouncy seat. He hated it. but he likes to sit in it now as a lounge chair, so I guess it wasn't a complete waste! lol

We use/used our PnP, diaper genie, diaper warmer (winter baby!), travel system a ton. These are things that a lot of moms say were a waste, but not for us.

We also used the swing for naps till 10 months. We love our video monitor & AngelCare monitor (still use it for thermometer).

  • The diaper genie was so frustrating to me!  I thought I just HAD to have one since I would have 2 under 2yrs old and both in diapers at the same time.  Um, no.  It was a hassle and was used a month before I gave up on it.

I loved my wipe warmer, especially when winter came and I could change him without waking him with a cold wipe.  That being said, I hated the bottle warmer.

I was given an angel care monitor and gave it away.  I was recently given another monitor system and I gave that one away...just not useful for us.

I was given COUNTLESS carriers and none of them were useful for me except the snuggly.  I LOVED carrying baby in that one.  I had one in my car that was fitted for me and one in Hubbys jeep fitted for him.

I have one of those mosquito net things that cover the baby's car seat and I have NEVER used it...going on baby 4 and its in the wrapper still.

I have two or three changing pads that go in the diaper bags...never used.

My diaper bag was cute but so not useful for me.  I got frustrated with the amount of pockets it had and found that my trips out were so quick and frequent that I didnt need one.  I carry American Eagle purses and bags and its just too easy to throw a diaper, spit cloth, bottle, paci, and rattle in that and run.

We had a doorway swing we were given...and the molding on the doorways was too thick to make it hold properly.  It was an older model home we were renting and it just didnt work out.

I could think of a lot more things but I think this was just off the top of my head.

  • We found the swing, Bumbo and bouncer seat useless. However, other people obviously feel differently. We never had a bottle or wipe warmer and never missed wither. We also could not, however, live w/o the diaper genie - to this day!

We used the wipe warmer all the time.  Still do. DS never had a problem with cold wipes when we were out.  It was most useful for us in the middle of the night. If I used a cold wipe after I fed him and he passed out, he would wake up and stay awake for awhile.  When we started using the wipe warmer, he stayed asleep during the diaper change and I got back to bed much sooner.

I hardly used the bumbo seat

Diaper genie. The plastic started to smell horrible so I got an Ubbi diaper pail (steel). This baby has an Ubbi diaper pail too.

  • 1) A changing table.  Never used it.  DS is such a mover.... he rolls, kicks, etc.  I always felt safer on the floor, so never used it.

    2) pack and play- when we travel 95% of hotels have cribs.  Our family also has a crib, so we never really used it.    Also, the 1 time we tried it DS hated it.

    3) i never bougth one thankfully, but we don't use a garbage can of any kind in the nursury.   As I mentioned above, we change on the floor... so I primarily do it in the family room and then throw the diaper away in teh kitchen garbage.  We take it out every day, so it never smells or anything.

    4) wipe warmers, bottle warmers, etc-- never owned them, but never needed

    5) I took back my swing.  DS hated it the 1st time he used it, decided to return and so glad I did.

    6) receiving blankets-- we swaddled with the swaddle blankets we got at the hospital until 2 months, then moved to halo sleep sacks, which he still uses and loves at a little over 2 years.

    7) soft spouted sippy cups.   My DS hated them-- we took the bottle away at 13 months and preferred the hard tip sippys.  I think this is individual for kids however- so my advice is don't buy more than 1-- see what LO likes (similar to advice on bottles and pacifiers as those are variable as well).

    8) the angelcare monitor... it gave me a heart attack every 10 minutes as it would go off.   I just kept DS in our room in a crib until 6 months so I could watch him live and then moved to his room at 6 months with a cheap sony monitor that worked fine, once biggest risk of SIDS had passed.

    9) grocery cart/high chair cover.  They always slipped for me and DS would move them and suck on teh handles that were dirty.   I gave them away and started bringing my next generation anti-bacterial wipes everywhere and wipe those types of things down before I put in DS-- why less stuff, works better and is easier IMO.

    10) hands free nursing bra... I hated mine.  I never found it hard to just lean against my desk with the bottles attached and work (I have a door that I can close and lock) and the hands free thing was constricting and a PITA for me.   I went back to work at 4 months and pumped until 13 months.  I thnk this is individual.  Try one and see if it works for you.

really-- I realized taht a lot of the stuff you get is a space waster.   What I really used was the rock and play for first 3 months only, the bouncer for 1st 5 months only, diaper bag (still using now), nursery furniture (note for me-- I did not use the glidder until 8 or 9 months when DS got sick... I preferred to nurse him in my bed since he was in our room in a crib until 6 months.

I say just follow your gut, every person I know is different!!

  • and gerber was the only brand of clothes that fit my DS correctly (6 lb 9 oz 22 inch long)... he stayed super long and skinny and still is.   70th+ for height, 5th percentile for weight.

Same with newborn sized diapers-- we used for 12 weeks.. others never use them.

Bumpo-- my DS could sit in it now at 2 years old if he wanted (he is super narrow) but he really only used from a touch before 3 months to 5 months.   He sat entirely unsupported by 5 months and he had very good head control so we were able to use early and he liked it as he loved to practice sitting.   We only used it on the floor for about 5 minutes at a time.  I got it used, but I thought it was ok.

Oh-- the highchair.  We only used it from 6 months(when started solids) until 12 months.   He loves being at the table in the booster-- so I like the booster/high chair combo thing that Fisher price has.   I sold the big high chair and won't use one for my 2nd at all now that I have that fisher price thing.

  • Speaking of Bumbos: When we were registering before DD was born, I pointed to the Bumbo and said, "I think we need one of these." DH says, "Why? What's it do?" I told him, "Umm..I don't know. I just know my friends with kids all have one...?" haha I felt like a teenager telling him everyone else has one. He was right. They're not very safe or useful IMO.

Like PPs have said, these will all be different for everyone. But one thing no one else has mentioned - hooded towels and an infant robe. I found it a lot easier to use one of our regular bath towels, and DD seems so much cozier. And I have never found a reason to put her in a robe rather than just getting her dressed. Although, they are cute!

  • I got a LOT of use out of the Bumbo seat but DS was a 4lb 15oz preemie so he fit in it a lot longer.

We STILL use our diaper genie but never even thought of getting a wipe warmer.  Here in the Phoenix area we don't have much use for those =)

We used the bouncy seat maybe a handful of times but he wasn't really into it.  The swing however was a life saver!
