Two Under 2

Hot car, sleeping kids

If you arrive home and your children are sleeping and you intend to move them inside sleeping, which do you move first? Does the weather impact your choice? What about relative age of the kids? What about if one is sleeping and the other isn't? Any other factors that influence your choice?

  • If one is sleeping and the other isn't, I take them inside at the same time. If I have a baby in an infant carrier, I take them both inside at the same time, whether they are sleeping or not.

If you're talking about two toddlers sleeping, I first take in the one who is a deeper sleeper, and therefore will hopefully continue to sleep while my SFD (stupid effing dog) barks her head off while I go back out to get the other kid. DD2 happens to be the deeper sleeper, so she is who I'd bring in first with two sleeping toddlers.

If the weather is extreme, I would likely wake one and have them walk inside to avoid leaving anyone in the car.

  • It only takes a minute or two to bring each child inside.  If they are both sleeping I'll actually unload everything else first, and prop the door open so I can just unbuckle and bring them right in and upstairs to bed.

This is what I do too.  To unload I have to leave the hatch open anyway, so it's not getting any hotter in the vehicle and I can unload in peace and then I bring in the kids.  First is usually my baby in the bucket seat because I can just put her down in the seat and then go out to get my older one.

  • We live in a house that we own, so walking from our driveway to the kids room is a short distance. If they're both sleeping, I grab one, put them into their bed, then go back for the other. If one is sleeping/one is awake, I get the sleeping one in bed first then go get the child that is awake.

  • Ok, I feel better now. I was having a guilty moment yesterday leaving the baby in a "hot" car while bringing her sleeping brother inside. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

If they are both sleeping I take the baby first as I can move him w/ the car seat and he is not mobile so I can bring #1 in all the way to his room and just put the baby inside. If they are both awake I take my toddler out first because he can walk in the house by himself but I already have the baby unbuckled so I can get him out of the car fast.
