When did your baby settle to head-down?

I am 29 weeks and I still feel baby flip flopping all over, and feel kicks both high and low. My MW said that she gets concerned (not her actual word) at 34 weeks, but its nice if they are head down before then.

I'm just wondering when is common for baby's to settle into position. I think I remember 30 or 32 weeks with my daughter. My real question though, is should I be doing anything at this point to encourage baby to get head down, or is it pointless since he/she is still likely to keep flip flopping?

Re: When did your baby settle to head-down?

  • Since I have been fighting with my non-natural pregnancy/birth SIL about this for the last 2 weeks. I will chime in. Her ob like to have all babies head down by 32 weeks and will physically turn babies at that point. I told her that everything I have read says it not a big deal till 34-36 weeks and that starting baby encouragement at 32 weeks seems to work best. So while you can start thinking baby be head down now I wouldn't do anything to involved untill at least 31-32 weeks and then no radical actions in my opinion till 36.

  • mine was not head down at 32 but was at 33 and still is at this point.  She best be staying like that!  I can't do acrobatics to get her head down when I'm on bedrest :P

Around 32 weeks I started doing spinning babies techniques and walking a lot to encourage him to stay down. My MW said they will find a position they like and stick with it, so it is worth it to encourage them early on.

This - I don't think it "matters" (as in, let's try for a version or schedule a cesarean) until 36+ weeks, but I think it's good to encourage them to get into a NB-friendly position as space gets tighter with the hopes that they'll then stay that way.

  • To answer your question about encouraging baby go head down.  Lots and lots of pelvic tilts, avoid lounging back (like no reclining) and crossing your legs.  Basically stick to sitting in straight backed chairs or a birth ball.  The baby's head and spine are it's heaviest parts so you really want to choose positions where gravity has the opportunity to pull the baby head down and facing backwards.

  • I will be 37 weeks on Wednesday and last Thursday (at just over 36 weeks) at my non-stress test, the tech advised that he is head down.  That happened sometime between 34 and 36 weeks because I had to have a late u/s at 34 weeks and he was still transverse.

From what I was always told by my OBs/MWs, they don't start to worry if the baby isn't head down until 35-36 weeks.

  • I'm pretty sure he has been head down since about 28 weeks.  My midwife confirmed him being head down yesterday.
