C-sections

Ladies who had a c-section and another child at home...

How was the recovery while caring for your nb and older child?  Will have a RCS on 7/12 and have a 12 month old DD at home.  What are the logistics regarding holding my DD, etc.?

Re: Ladies who had a c-section and another child at home...

  • Honestly, I felt nearly normal by the time I got home from the hospital apart from the massive amounts of swelling.  Of course, I was still a little stiff and certainly wouldn't have wanted to run a marathon, but it was a lot better than I expected.  My DS1 was 21 months when I brought DS2 home from the hospital.  I made sure that when I picked up DS1 that I pointed his legs away from me so that he wasn't able to kick my abdomen area.  If you have someone at home to help you out for a few days or so after you get home, fantastic.  My DH was able to take the week off after DS2 was born.  If not, it will be okay.  Pace yourself.  Don't do anything you don't have to do--it will affect your post-partum bleeding to be too active.

The biggest thing for me after bringing home DS2 wasn't the c-section....it was trying to balance taking care of a newborn with having a toddler on the loose.  You're going to have that regardless of the c-section recovery.  Just sleep when you can!

  • I was able to hold DS pretty much right after I got home. I mean, I tried not to, but once your home and have a needy older LO that wants attention you sometimes forget, and it was fine.  Like I said in the other post, lift with your knees and listen to your body.  Ditto PP to keep kiddo's legs away from your stomach, a misplaced kick would definitely suck. Just don't bend over at the waist and try to pick them up quickly from there.
