VBAC

Help - need your opinions!

So, we scheduled a repeat csection for the first week of July because I have not made any progress in a month (fingertip dilated, 50% effaced), and I'm not favorable for an induction at this point. My OB is still open to change for an induction if progress is made at my last appointment next week (cord prolapse is the reasoning for first csection), but will not allow me to go past 41 weeks. I've got all of the lovely pains/swelling, false labor, and whatnot so I'm worried that I scheduled it too soon out of discomfort and not pushing back enough with my OB. What are your thoughts on this situation? Does this sound reasonable to you? Is the csection scheduled to soon?

Re: Help - need your opinions!

  • My induction for my VBAC was scheduled for 41 weeks because the hospital would not allow me to go past that date.  I was a fingertip dilated and 70% effaced and the induction was successful.

The fact that you are a fingertip and 50% when you haven't even reached your due date means nothing. Some people don't do anything until they are IN labor (which was apparently my case).  But otherwise, if your doctor is willing to wait until 41 weeks and make a decision then, that is a good sign.  Perhaps you can try the induction regardless of progress?  If that is what you want.

  • What she said. Dilation prior to labor tells you nothing. I've had a friend go from 0 to delivered in 12 hrs (FTM) at 39.6 weeks and a friend be 4 then 5 cms for a month and deliver at 41.2 weeks after going into labor on her own.

You aren't at your due date yet and a lot can happen between now and 41 weeks. I'd cancel the RCS and see what happens if at 41 weeks you are still pregnant then try an induction.

  • Ditto everything pps said.  Your cervical progress right now doesn't mean anything.

  • I was a fingertip and 50%.  My pit induction was very successful. I'd give yourself as much time as possible.

  • Ditto all the other ladies.  You might try some natural induction methods to get things moving along.

  • Again, ditto the PPs replies Yes

Here's a link I was given by both my midwife and my doula when pregnant with DS:

And you might ask your OB about a foley bulb induction before doing a RCS to see if that will help to dilate you more (assuming you're not dilating/in labor before you hit 41 weeks...).

  • I will be checked on July 2 when I go in for my RCS. If I have made progress (enough) they will help me some and try it that way first)

  • Thank you all of your replies! Smile
