Emotional eating in toddlers

This is a friend of mine.  She has a finess/wellness site and this is from that.  But, I thought many of us probably deal with this and might be interested.  She's obviously passionate about this topic so try to overlook all the stutters

Re: Emotional eating in toddlers

  • I agree with her. My ILs always give DD cookies, ice cream, candy, etc. when she starts crying. It kills me. I don't mind for her to have the occasional snack, but I've spent my whole life trying to "unlearn" food as comfort. I don't want my DD to face the same struggle.

This is my siggy. Love it.

  • I can't watch from work, but I will definitely watch when I get home. On the most basic level, without hearing what she has to say, I am willing to bet I agree with her. I have always wondered, though, in the middle of the night, once in a very blue moon when my kid wakes up and WILL NOT go back to sleep and she's having a melt down, so I give her a couple of oz of milk to help her settle, does that count? What about when we're out shopping for groceries and she's getting really restless in the shopping cart, so I give her a few goldfish to get us through the grocery line? It doesn't feel quite the same as, "Aww, you're sad? Have a lollipop.." but I suppose it is..?

  • I agree with her 1000%.  I love how she says her kid doesn't need a lollipop "for doing what he is supposed to do" (like behaving during a hair cut or in the bank). The idea of creating emotional eaters with this type of reinforcement has never actually occurred to me, but it completely makes sense.

SarahL - I don't think the 2 examples you pointed out are really what she is talking about.  Maybe the goldfish in the grocery store is on a similar level, but once you watch the video you'll know what I mean.

  • I'm so glad you posted this. I struggle with food issues and worry about passing my bad habits on to Liam. Thanks for sharing!

  • I worry about this all the time as well. Of course, since my daughter doesn't talk really--it is hard to gauge if she is really hungry when she is whining or if she is just eating out of boredom. As of now, any snack that she gets is either cheese, yogurt, fruit or veggies and cheerios. (Freeze dried or fresh) I am hoping that those will be acceptable snacks in her mind for years to come :)
