Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Opinions please:taking 10 month old on vacation to D.C.

My DH and I are trying to plan a trip at the end of the year and we were thinking of going to Washington D.C. My ds is 4 months now, but will 10 months in December.

Anyway, I just wanted to get opinions from moms who have 10 month olds to see if it is a good idea. The plane ride will be tough because I'm thinking he will be at the age where he wants to move around but besides that, do you guys think it's a bad idea?

DH says our DS will be fine because we have the stroller and the baby carrier. But I don't think he understands the difference between a 4 month old who likes to nap in the stroller and carrier and a 10 month old who will want to get out of the stroller and crawl around an get into everything. But then again, I am not sure how a 10 month old baby will be either. (ftm here lol)

So, what do you guys think? Good idea or bad? We would stay for 4 nights, see a few sights and museums, it's going to be chilly but we will bundle up and not be outside for long.

  • I say do it- we have family that lives there and visit quite often, buy lo his own ticket for plane so he/she can sit in their own ar seat where they are comfy- bring lots of toys- it will be a new place I think they will be fine just taking in the new scenery and just be sure to give them time on the floor when they need it with like a blanket or something- have fun!!!

  • I think it should be fine. My DD likes her stroller. She has a little cup holder where I can put her sippy or some snacks. Also, if your LO gets tired of the stroller, you can always find a place to park it in some grass and let him out for some play time.

  • I wouldn't do it. DC in Dec can be chilly or ridiculously cold depending on the year and there is a lot of walking betweeb museums. The check in to the museums can also be a pain with strollers and diaper bags.

I agree that it would likely be too cold.  If it wasn't for that I would do it.

  • I'd do it in a heartbeat.  If it's cold, put some blankets on him. Compared to most of the US, DC isn't going to be that cold. If your kiddo is crawling by then you can always find somewhere to let them 'free' to burn off some energy, but the stimulation of just being out and about will probably be enough to keep them happy.

  • Ironic that you ask about WDC for a 10 month old, because we just got back from five days in WDC with our 10 month old!  Visited in-laws, went to the Smithsonians, etc.  You are right, the plane trip was more challenging with a 10m than a 3.5m.  LO squirmed a lot this time - thankfully she did nap an hour (of 3 hours) in both directions.  She fussed as the descents started (which she hadn't before) and nursing, drinking water, sucking on her paci etc. didn't help this time.  But we got through it; in fact we're flying again in three weeks to NYC - so either my memory is poor, or I am a glutten for challenges.  BTW - LO chose our airport baggage claim area to take her very first steps.  LOL.

  • If DC weather isn't a problem for the adult then it won't be a problem for the baby, dress in layers etc.

For plane rides, if you plan to buy a ticket, make sure and bring the car seat onboard so you can strap him in. If you don't want to buy him a ticket then  you'll just have to hold him and it's not a big deal. I would save the money on a 3rd ticket and make sure you get a direct flight.

We've travelled multiple times with DS and DD went on her 1st trip when she was 7 months old. It can be done and we love it.
