Hemangioma update

DS finally got in to see the doc today.  He was supposed to go to a special hemangioma clinic that CHKD has set up once a month, but it got cancelled this month.  So we had rescheduled to see just the dermatologist from the clinic.  He had 3 doctors and one nurse today, and he was in such a good mood this morning.  Everyone loved him! haha. We found out he actually has two hemagiomas.  The one behind his ear, which is obvious, which they call segmented (I think).  And another subcutaneous one on the back of his head.  We knew there was a little purple bump back there and got them to look at that as well.

His course of treatment for now is beta-blocker cream.  Because it's a vascoconstrictor it's supposed to help in shrink down.  I've researched it some, and have seen a lot of info with postive results.  So excited that we get to try something to help it that doesn't require surgery!

How are the other hemangioma babies doing?

Re: Hemangioma update

  • DS has a cavernous hemangioma on his neck. He has been on steroid treatments since he was 5 weeks old. He responded really well but both times we have weaned him off the steroids the hemangioma has grown back quite rapidly. Right now we are off the steroids completely and have been for about 3 weeks. It has grown back but DH and I monitor it and take it on a day to day basis. We go back to see the specialist in early August and will re-evaluate then. That is unless we see that it is starting to affect his motor skills/swallowing.

Glad your LO is responding to the beta-blocker cream! We are hoping to avoid surgery as well.

  • So glad that you can avoid surgery if you can. That is such great news. My LO's is still very small on his side. The dr measured it at his 6 month appointment and it really hasn't grown at all in 3 months. We are very fortunate. GL to both PP!

  • Evan has two hemangiomas that he's had since birth. One on his neck and a little higher on the back of his head. My pedi showed no concern over either and he hasn't needed any treatments. The one on his head has faded significantly but the one on his neck is still there.
