I've been making an effort to buy as many things as I can locally. It's fairly easy with groceries/produce, but what do you do about other house hold items? I need a new bath mat and a door mat, etc. I'm not sure if any local/small business-type places carry those things (maybe a hardware store?), but even if they did, wouldn't they be the same brand that Target & BBB carry? What do you do for those types of things?
For things like that, I check out local shops and the artisan booths at the farmers markets. I live in an artsy area, so I can usually find things like that made by local artists. If I can't find what I'm looking for, though, I just buy at Target and go for the most natural materials I can get.
It's all about doing what you can. Some things just aren't available in every area.
