if you've dropped a night feeding w/ CIO...

how did you know to drop it?

i tried last night just giving DS 1/2 of his bottle and he happily went back to sleep. i wanted to see if he actually needed the bottle or if he really is just eating it out of habit. he won't turn down food if you put it in front of him, but i guess the only way to tell if he really needs it is to try without, right? he doesn't do well with us soothing, so this leads me to believe CIO is about our only option. he did well with CIO for naps, took about a week and now he goes down with minimal fussing for naps.

thoughts?

ETA: he had been sleeping 9pm-630ish, bottle, then up for the day at 9 up until a week ago when he started getting up every 2-3hrs again, that lasted for a few days. now he's 9pm-3 or 4am, then up again at 6, up for the day at 9.

  • Sounds like you would be a great candidate for gradually reducing the amount in the bottle until it's not needed at all. Do half for a few days and then do 1/4 for a few days. He'll probably drop it in his own at that point. Or, if not, you will feel more confident letting him CIO after a week or so of him proving that he doesn't really need the food. Give him time to make up the ounces throughout the rest of the day and then go for it.

  • thanks. i'm not sure when to start this, we're on vacation right now and headed back tomorrow. i want to give him a couple days to adjust to being back in his own crib, but then my dad is visiting next weekend. i never thought about gradually reducing the amount in his bottle, that's much better than CIO which would inevitably wake up my husband.

he has decreased the amount that he's eating during the day since starting solids. he was taking 34-38oz, now we struggle to get him to 30oz some days. he's only taking 4oz of solids per day, 2oz 2x/day.
