1st Trimester

Sleepless Nights

Good morning friends! I'm a little frustrated because while I've seemed to find some remedy for m/s, I've seemed in turn to become nocturnal lately, and not by choice. I get tired at a "normal" bedtime, so I go to bed... at which point two things take place that jump start yet another restless, sleepless night. First, my mind starts racing about all-things-baby (this is my first baby). Second, I have to get up ump-teen times throughout the night to pee, regardless of how much I drink before bed. I furthermore cannot seem to be comfortable in almost any position, which seems a little ridiculous at just 8 1/2 weeks. All this to ask...any suggestions? I really don't want to expose LO to too many drugs, safe or not, without major necessity, but do you all have any thoughts or experience here?

Re: Sleepless Nights

  • I'm having the same problem as well.  I can suggest valerian root pills or tea before bed, makes you really tired.  I have researched and found no adverse affects to the baby.  Also magnesium helps with sleep, which in small doses (1 pill) before bed isn't harmful to the baby.

Thank you! I'll look into these.

  • I know exactly how your feeling! Try and be active during the day. When I'm not nauseated I try and go for walks. I used to keep myself up at night thinking of everything baby (this is my first too!) and it would make my anxiety race (which could be why u can't get comfortable)  I honestly had to learn to clear my head and not think about anything. I also have a fan going and I try to just concentrate on the noice and nothing else. It was hard to turn off my brain at night but I sleep so much better now than I did. Also I am going pee a lot less at night! Maybe it's because I'm getting near the second tri. Good luck and I hope that helps!

  • I've been having this problem too. I flop around at least 2  hours sometimes more before falling asleep. I just want to turn my mind off!!!!! Ugh. I go to the doctor this coming Friday, I'm going to ask her what she suggests, bc already having a 2 year old and no sleep is driving me insane!!!!

If you knew how lonely my life has been And how long I've been so alone And if you knew how I wanted someone to come along And change my life the way you've done

  • I had this earlier on - from about 6-8 weeks.  Then the exhaustion set it and it didn't matter, soon after I hit the pillow I was out.

  • I just started using a Boppy pregnancy pillow, which seems to be helping a little bit. Last night I took a generic Simply Sleep (like Benadryl/Unisom), which also helped a bit.
