Question for dairy-free BF mommies

We were doing so well--yellow, seedy poops for about 2 weeks (went dairy- free 3 weeks ago). Then came Tuesday and stupid mommy had buttermilk ranch salad dressing without thinking! I didn't have more than a tablespoon, but LO has had green poop for two days now. Is that possible?

Also, is too much sugar a bad thing when breastfeeding?

One last thing, my stomach was upset from something I ate--(diarrhea) the past two days. Could that be why her poop is green?

Thanks!!

Re: Question for dairy-free BF mommies

  • My LO has had green poop for a month now; I've been dairy-free for a few weeks with a couple slip-ups and it's still pretty green (more of a yellowish green now, but still). I cannot figure out why it's happening. I don't think it's a hindmilk/foremilk issue since I usually only offer one breast per feeding. Sorry I can't be more help, because I have no clue what's causing it myself!

I was worried about it, but my pedi assured me that it can be normal in some babies. She said as long as he is growing well (which he is) and doesn't seem uncomfortable it's not a cause for concern.  His gassiness has cleared up almost entirely since I eliminated dairy though, so I know it is helping him.

  • You would be surprised by how little it takes to trigger a reaction. DD1 would have issues even if I ate a piece of bread with dairy in it. Unfortunately some kids are just really sensitive.

    This.

  • Some people lose their lactose tolerance as they age or if they stop eating dairy. Your butt might have been exploding because you lost your tolerance and then ate the ranch. That small amount seems like not enough to mess with you guys so much, but who knows? Maybe that was it?

I think too much sugar is bad pretty much always. Sugary foods are usually not nutritious, so they are taking the place of something else in your diet that isn't empty calories. (Said after I cram two biscuits in my face, and they were not whole grain biscuits.)

    This.

    Ditto!
