April 2012 Moms

Silly Mom (NIP related)

The other night DH and I went out to dinner with my parents to a restaurant/bar. It's a restaurant that specializes in wings and the fact that it has over 140 beers on tap and 200+ bottles to choose from. Anyways we are regulars at that place, like first name basis and "our" booth is saved for us Thursday night kind of regulars(mainly just my parents now since having LO).

Okay to the point, LO was sleeping when we showed up and had slept through what would have been her normal feeding time. We had been running errands all day with her so her nap schedule was kinda tossed out the window, so it was expected. However, me, having no NIP shame didn't see it as an issue, I'd just feed her when she woke up and was hungry.

Well when Pey woke up and decided to eat, I started to lift up my top shirt, unhook my nursing tank, and begin to adjust to get her latched and my mom about jumped out of her skin. She was all "What?! Here? NOW?!" I was like "mom chill, once she is latched she will look like a sleeping baby" She argued back with, "But there are men in here" Uhhh okay?? Whatever, so I got her latched and she just kept looking all around, like imagine a shoplifter's actions whilst stuffing their bag full of merchandise, that make sense? She was drawing so much attention to the whole nursing session, so unnecessary...ugh. I nursed her through all the staff/friends coming to the table to chat and nursed through ordering my food. I don't think my mom quite understands to concept of "if you don't make it a big deal, IT WON'T BE."

Side note, I got to try to Sunset Wheat, A-MA-ZING. I think it was Kdrakley who compared it to fruity pebbles, she is soooo right, spot on!

  • fantastic story.  It can be hard for people who havent NIP'd before to understand how easy and wonderful it is.  Especially the generation before us. My mom nursed me and my sis, so she is supportive, but whenever LO and I are at the mall there is inevitably one or two older ladies that walk right up to me to "see the baby" and have no idea she is nursing until they are standing toe to toe with me.  its hilarious to watch their expressions.

  • I think this is why i'm so unsuccessful, because I draw my own attention. It such a process to get her latched without everyone watching. Blech. I just attempted to nurse in front of my MIL. She wasn't in the room when I got DD latched, so I covered my opposite shoulder with a light blanket (DD hates one over her head), and I made like a "wall" so when MIL came in the room she couldn't see anything. She came in the room, I expected her to sit down (made DH move from where I wanted her to sit and everything). She walks over, looks IN and sees emy entire boob. Awesome.

  • Lol! I'd rather my mom look around like that than staring at my boobs, which is what she tends to do when I nurse around her (and it's just too dang hot to make C hide under a cover right now).

I guess I should have included in my story that my mom FF both my brother and I. So she has no experience with anything nursing.

My 20 year old BIL walked up on me nursing once. It was the first day he met her and he started walking towards me saying "aww she sleeping?" I said "nope, eating" He stopped dead in his tracks and walked away, his face was priceless, poor guy. I have little to no modesty, so I enjoy watching others' reactions. I constantly have to remind myself not everyone is an open book like I am...oops

Meh, when I nurse at my parents' house(where I tend to let a lot more boob hang out than when I NIP) I notice my mom glancing over every once in a while. It doesn't bother me. It's kind of funny, but I think of her as a curious child, she didn't nurse my brother or I, so I know it's just her curiosity. Again, I have very little modesty, I understand I am not in the norm.

  • Yes!! It was me with the fruity pebbles comparison ;-) isn't it delicious??

Back to the main point - good for you for not getting flustered with your mom! If baby wants to eat, then baby's gotta eat!

Haha, I mixed up your TB screen name with your MFP username. Oops, but you knew I was talking about you.

That beer was seriously one of the best I have had. Yum.

Yeah I haven't logged in weeks. With my new gallbladder friendly diet I have to maintain in order to avoid attacks I am watching the pounds fly off. I dread the day I stop BFing and I regain a few of those pounds. Right now I am 22lbs under my pre-preg weight.

    And enjoy that beer tonight!

I actually stopped logging because I notice I lose more weight when I'm not logging.  I tend to eat fairly well in general and I think logging was 1) putting me into slightly starvation mode, even though I wasn't hungry.. and/or 2) making me stress more about..  not that I felt very stressed.  Regardless, I stopped logging because my body apparently likes it better when I don't log.  Maybe when I hit a plateau I'll go back to logging.

  • Good for you! I haven't NIP in front of too many people (I NIP often but mostly alone or with DH/DS) however we are going on vacation with my ILs who are anti bfing to the point of bringing formula over and sayin DS needed real milk (ya I lost it on her then). Should be interesting! Sounds like I need to try that beer!
