What prenatal vitamin are you all taking?

I think I am going to switch my vitamins since it doesn't have any iron or dha. What vitamins are you all taking? Do they have an weird side effects? Do you like them? I was thinking about taking Citranatal Harmony, but many have said it made their hearts race. Has anyone taken this prenatal?

Re: What prenatal vitamin are you all taking?

  • I've been taking CVS' brand of prenatals, that include DHA and iron. They are usually buy one get one free. They have been great so far!

  • The pharmacy at my supermarket has free ones with prescription, that is what my Dr. recommends, so that is what I take.  I've had no problems with them.

I take Flintstone's Chewables.  I know what you're thinking--"those aren't prenatals!"  They have everything in them that is necessary for a prenatal vitamin, they taste good, and they don't have to be swallowed whole.  My OB okayed them.

  • Which Flinestones are you taking? I just want to make sure I'm getting enough folic acid and iron. My doctor says Flinestones are okay too.

  • I'm on citranatal harmony and have been for about a month.  I have had not problems with them at all.  The plus of this vitamin is that it has colace in it and helps combat the constipation.  I will admit the colace made me have diarrhea and bad gas for about a week but it seems to have leveled out now.  I also take a daily flinstone on top of this per my dr's recommendations because my iron stores are low and we are trying to prevent anemia before I need a full on iron supplement.

Plus I got the sample from my dr that had a coupon for $10 off each script in the box.

Huh. My doctor prescribed a prenatal for me: Zatean-Pn DHA softgels. I love them! Cheap (for me with my insurance), have pretty much stopped my nausea, no bad side affects so far and I've been on them for a month.

  • A food based prenatal that you can buy at Whole Foods - the name is escaping me, but they are lower in iron so don't upset my stomach. I take a separate DHA pill.

I take these too and I love them! I've been taking them for about two years and I've never had a problem as long as I take them with food. My doctor also told me they are one of the best PNVs out there so I figured I'd stick with them. I get mine at Costco and they're in the coupon every other month or so, I usually buy two when I see them in the add.

I take nature's bounty "your life prenatals." They are fine- Ive been on them since going off the pill 2 years ago. When I am too sick, I take 2 childrens chewable multivitamins, my doc suggested them as a fine alternative.

I saw people worrying about this too, as I was eating a bag of M&Ms. I curiously looked at the M&Ms and they also have red dye #40. I'm def not going to stop eating these so I don't think I am going to worry anymore. :)

I tried the CVS brand and they taste gross.  They have an almost sweet taste to them that made me want to gag every time I took one.

YES! Someone a while ago brought up that red dye #40 has been linked to autism. This why I switched. I now take Rainbow Light prenatal which is food based and NO artificial colors. I also take Expecta DHA.

(Plus, those Nature Made with DHA are freaking HUGE and smell like fish!)

  • In the morning I take B6 and an iron supplement (Rite Aid brand).

At night I take the Vitafusion prenatal gummies with DHA.

I don't like swallowing large pills to begin with, let alone when I'm feeling nauseous. I have a sample prescription from my doctor that I might switch to after the nausea subsides and my gag reflex calms down.

  • I've been taking the prenatal one vitamins from VitaMedMD since before I was even pregnant (my doctor's office had samples which is how I found out about them).  The pills are pretty big, but they're gel caps so they're easy to get down and they contain enough of the really important stuff, including DHA. I probably should be taking an extra calcium supplement though.  So far they haven't made me sick at all.  I pay about $20/month. They now also have two other kinds that are Rx only, but I think the only difference is that they contain more folic acid (over 1000mg as opposed to just 975mg).

Same here.  My doctor had prescribed a prenatal which cost $50 a month, I just stocked up on four months' worth of CVS brand prenatals for not quite half of that.  My prescription did contain a stool softener but I have IBS so constipation has not been a problem for me.  (Yet.  Knock on wood.)  They are a little tough for me to get down but don't generally cause nausea, although I've been fortunate enough that my morning sickness has not been rough to begin with.

Interestingly, I just looked at the label on my vitamins and they contain a lot of B6. Isn't that supposed to help with morning sickness?  Maybe that's why I've managed to escape nausea for the most part.

My only problem is that I really only take them when I'm really sick. However, I went out of town for five days and decided to only take the flintstones, for simplicity and since the bottle is smaller. But, they made me want to throw up everytime I took one. I guess its just conditioning from always being sick when I take them?

  • I use the GNC brand. They are fairly cheap, and you can get them with or without iron. They also had the highest level of folic that I could find on the shelves (1000 mcg - most Rx ones are this high, but not many over the counter ones are)

I take a separate DHA pill.

  • I take the Target brand gummy PNV.  It has DHA in it and tastes pretty good.  Actually they taste so good I was sad the first day I took them because I had to wait another 24 hours before I could take any more.  Occasionally I take an extra 400 mcg of folic acid but only because I am pg and nursing.  I am trying to take Calcium since I am high risk of osteoporosis.  And while not a vitamin, I am taking a probiotic to prevent the yeast infections I got while pg last time.  As for side effects, iron is constipating.

This is what I was taking until 2 weeks ago, but the bit of nausea that I sometimes got with them got to be too much when the morning sickness really started to kick in.  I have switched to Vitafusion PreNatal gummy vitamins.  They don't have iron in them though, but they do have dha.

  • After some research I decided on New Chapter Organics Perfect Prenatal.  It has lots of good stuff in it and is whole food based.

The one caveat is I've been too sick to take it lately, so I have been taking Vitafusion gummies.  I don't think they're even near the quality of the Perfect Prenatal, but I figure it's better than nothing right now since I can't deal with swallowing pills.

I was taking Vitafusion gummies, but they were making me gag too much. And they don't have iron so I was taking a separate supplement. Now I'm taking the Target brand ones. They have no DHA. I was going to ask about this at my appointment on Thursday!
