How much housework do you get done?

I'm trying to explain to DH that with a newborn and toddler and very little, if any, napping crossover, I just can't do it all. For those of you who are home with 2 little ones, how much housework do you get done?

Re: How much housework do you get done?

  • I don't have a toddler, and I get VERY little housework done... if the dishes and one other household chore has been done, it's been a good day.

haha, I only have one, and I am lucky if I get the bottles washed so she can eat again!

  • I have found I have to really prioritize and multi task as best I can. Sometimes I literally only have 5-10 minutes while the toddler is watching tv or playing and the baby is either napping or in her bouncy seat or swing, so I generally use that time to clean up the dishes and kitchen. I also vaccuum right before the toddler's nap while she is sitting on the couch. It isn't a deep cleaning by any means, but at least things are somewhat picked up and clean.

I am thinking of getting a housecleaner to come twice a month and do more of a thorough cleaning, like the bathrooms, appliances, etc.

  • I only have the one, and if I can manage to wash and dry one emergency load of laundry it's a good day. If it weren't for an awesomely helpful dh and my mom coming up to help with housework twice a week, we'd probably be using paper towel for plates right now :p

  • I only have 1 and sometimes don't even get to shower much less do housework...
  • DH was complaining about housework so I left him home alone with the two.  Then came home and proceeded to ask him what he did... his answer was change diapers... so you didn't sweep? you didn't do laundry? you didn't ... understanding crossed it face and we work on things together now.

    This.

Plus, laundry... Because laundry is never ending. I vacume because she sleeps when I do.

  • I only have one and I feel great just getting the dishes done and bottles washed!  LO is six weeks so I'm hoping  I can figure out how to get more done soon!

It's so hard.  Especially if you work full time.

The best decision we ever made was hiring a cleaning service.  They come every 2 weeks, and scrub our kitchen, floors, bathroom.  They change the sheets and dust.  The service we hired works with our budget, and we traded a few meals out to afford the service.  It's priceless.

  • I usually only get the bottles washed, a load or two of laundry and the kitchen cleaned. On the weekends when hubby is home I am able to vacuum and clean bathrooms.

  • I love the responses!

One day last week I didn't realize I hadn't showered until 11pm. So it is suffice to say sometimes housework gets done...other times no way jose.

Today I ran out to the mall for some things we needed - I came home and DH says, I can't get anything done, I responded with a yes I feel the same way during the week - :)

  • I have 2 under 2, right now I am on restriction as to what I can do because of my c/s (no vac, sweeping or mopping or heavy lifting). However I am able to get somethings done, but that also depends on the day and how tired I am. On a good day I might be able to get a load or two of laundry in and dried not folded. Dishes in the dishwasher and DD's toys picked up, counters wiped down, garbage out and beds made. Last week I skipped nap one day due to DS not wanting to sleep for a while and then when I finally did it was about 20 minutes until DD would have woken up so I cleaned one of our bathrooms.

DD is pretty helpful and independent so I am able to get some of these things done while DD plays and DS sleeps.

  • I tidy up but my house looks like a newborn rules. I do try to wash dishes and bottles daily. Laundry is twice a week. Hubby vacuums once a week. Everything else is ummm collecting dust.
  • I only have 1 and barely go to the bathroom by myself because my LO is always needing to be held. Doesn't sleep otherwise.. Luckily my younger sister is home for summer so I MIGHT be able to shower, wash bottles and/or do laundry sometime during the day but which means no nap so it's tough..
  • Ps I might get laundry washed but NEVER folded..
  • With just 1 baby, I get 1 small chore done a day. I mean come on, our main job is keeping LO alive, no? That's pretty dang important. Right now I have a lady come by every other week to scrub the place down and I just try to fill in the gaps. It's not too expensive and totally worth it IMO.

I only have one and I feel like I do a pretty decent job. I can't stand a mess so rather than sleep with DS is sleeping I usually pick up. I hired a maid to come every other week to do the real cleaning. So basically in that time in between I just keep it picked up. It was well worth the $50 I pay her to do it.

  • Ya, I got very little housework done, when my second child came home.  I was getting them to nap overlap after lunch (and still do most days).  But, don't worry about getting the housework done.  Your job right now is to take care of your children (and yourself!)

  • I have a 3 week old and have only been able to get laundry and dishes done. I've been able to sweep and mop my kitchen twice. I couldn't imagine throwing a toddler in the mix!

  • I only have a 19month old now, and we are looking to conceive before the end of the summer. Which would make DS 2 1/2 when the new baby arrives. I am nervous about this very scenario. I am also work from home, so this makes for days when I get zero house work done! Feeding, playing with DS and my job are always priority in my day...Household chores unfortunately come second. So this makes for a chaotic and messy house mostly.

  • I too try to get as much done as I can with 3 kids around, but it's exhausting & feels pointless at times.

DH is home with the kids 3 days a week (2 of them go to my mom's 1-2 of those days) and he just gets by keeping himself & the baby alive LOL.

On a good night, I end up washing dinner dishes while the kids are in the bath & switching out laundry loads after they've gone to bed.  Floors are another story, and it drives me batty not to keep the house as clean as I'd like!

  • I only have a 2 month old along with 3 dogs and a cat, but i can get so much done and i have no one to help me through the day. i normally get up around 7/8am and get my shower in (as my partner has been up, fed our son, and off to work by that time) then during the day i can get bills paid, laundry done (for me, my partner and our son) and that includes washing, drying and putting up. I clean the kitchen and vaccum the house and do every day pick up things.by the time my partner gets home. he makes dinner and we spend some time alone while our son sleeps then we both get our son ready for bed and feed him and we go to bed.

I learned that i can hold my son and feed him, while eatting something myself and paying bills at the same time.
